I got a phone call from mini of manhattan in reference to the rear fog lights; i wanted them ; but they were unavailable when i picked up my 04 mcs.So they called; as iwas on a list. When i asked about the toggle switch; the young lady informed me that it's a button installed to operate the rear fogs; not a toggle switch. She called from the service department; so i would hope she knows what's cookin. But then again; i would;nt be surprised if she gets her information from ophra or jerry springer.please give me the correct answer. thanks;jomo[

it's a toggle switch just like the rest of the switches in your car. it looks like this one. http://www.thelivingoods.com/mini/ToggleSwitchPanel/ since you have a 04 i would not pay anything. make them pick up the cost of the programing. you might has to pay the 75 bucks for the switch bank, but you can get it from classic cheaper. good luck

I've said it before and I'l say it again: Stay away from MINI of Manhattan. It is truly sad when a dealership that is owned by BMW doesn't have a clue. Chad is right as you'll see from anyone else who posted about the rear foglights, you'll receive a whole new toggle switch pack with the rear foglight toggle in it. Just installed mine last week and I'll have it programmed next week. Good luck with yours it is a fairly easy install if you decide to do it yourself.

chad, thanks for the great install site!

I also want front/rear fogs, but I'm unclear on the rear fog light part--what part of my rear lights does it activate? The front you have to install lights, right? But the rear is just a toggle? thanks, Jenni

add mini of sterling on the list! the salesperson still insists i can't get the rear fog light because "it has not been approved by bmw for sale in the states" eventhough i told her the option is there for $75.00 on the miniusa.com website! go figure ...

jenni,

you can get the front and rear in a kit. you will need to actually add lights if you do not have fronts, the rears are already there. it will be a bulb above the trun signal bulb in the rear (also used in rear brake light mods). the very top of the light. but to make it work you need to get a new switch pannel (that you will be getting anyways if your adding front fogs at the same time) and the dealer will need to program in the lights. i belive front and rear would need to be done. i do not know anyone yet that has added both front and rear lights. most of us jumped on the front fogs from the factory.

see this link for what it wold cost you. if you wnated to install everything yourself you could do it. you need to remove the front bumper though, still easy. and then you can go to the dealer for programing, or let them do everything. surch around on here and you will find all types of info on what is need for the rears and mods. hope thats helps.

Who are you talking to at Sterling? Let me know and I will have a talk with Crystal Waddy about it. She is now the GM for both sides, and was originally the Sales Manager for MINI. I have a good relationship with her and have no problem telling her that she needs to educate her MA's. Tell me it wasn't Keith that's telling you this...

Even more irritating hearing about this is the fact that Service AND Parts at Sterling know all about the fog light install, I know because I have a quote in writing from them for the install...

Here ... one of the first US MINIs upgraded to rear fogs (because I had the toggle panel already).
GBMINI web log - rear fog install

Scotty,
You will have to remove the brake light mod if you want rear fogs - there is a "diode" mode you can do instead that still lights the rear fogs during braking, but does not light the brake lights during rear fog usage!

IANCULL, Thanks for posting some pictures! I Like the look of the lights and the use of a toggle switch. I did do the diode in the brake harness to get the two lights to go on when I brake. Thanks for the info. Cheers

I don't know why you need the additional fog light with the DIY fog light mod...I would rather have the extra toggle for something else...like garage door switch or ECU/Shark performance to valet switch...

I was the first one to pick up the front/rear foglight kit from Classic from this announcement.
A couple of clarifications are needed here though:

You DONT have to have front foglights in order to have rears, but you will end up with a switch for non-existing front foglights if you opt to have the rears activated on a car without front foglights. Why? The switch panel you would get comes with the front toggle. It also comes with a toggle for either ASC+T or DSC, so you would end up with a toggle for a non-existing option if you car has neither.

The bumper (bumper cover actually) does NOT need to be removed. The lights are accessed and installed from inside the wheelwell on either side. Simply removing the plastic inside liner from each side does the trick.

The kit(s) did not come with installation instructions. For rear fogs only, it's a simple matter of swapping the toggle bank. (Simple is relative though, you still have to remove the infamous downtubes from either side of the center control area to do this, but it's still a half hour job at most; search around here for removing the tubes, it's been listed many times)

The front only and front rear kit (only difference here again is the switchbank) is quite involved. You get a pair of lamps, mounting hardware, a wiring harness (that needs to be modified with an extra set of provided connectors and wiring), a switch bank, relay, fuse, a handful of interior trim clips (because you need to take apart a good portion of the dash and the right-side kick panel/door sill molding), wire ties, and other little bits. No instructions, however. The commonly available install PDF File will show you what needs to be done, but contains a couple of arrors that I had to figure out for myself. Brian at Classic MINI was extremely helpful at trying to get me updated instructions without luck. The fixed for the errors are to change connector pins 13 and 17 at the toggle bank to 3 and 7, and the car DOES need to be coded, not code-independent like the instructions say. The wiring harness goes from the right foglight, then to the left, then the fusebox where you connect 4 wires into existing connectors, then through the firewall and inside the car where you make connections at the toggle bank and the infamous body control computer at the right side kickpanel. Not impossible for the do-it-yourselfer who is familiar with car wiring systems. You will get a crash-course on the MINI electrical subsystems while doing this.

You can make the 'brake light mod' and the rear foglights coexist, and I highly recommend doing so. I detailed how I did it, with simpler variations Here.

While you have your car apart, I recommend adding the Euro parcel shelf and the Aux jack if you have an mp3 player, if you dont already have these goodies.

If you are in the process of ordering a MINI and want the front fogs, get them now, because they are much more expensive to add later.

picked up the mini yesterday and asked the new salesperson (the one ordered the car for me has moved back to the bmw side) about the rear fog. he said it's here but "you know it is illegal"!!!

i had problem convincing the first salesperson that the rear fog is avail on the '04 and as retrofit. she was so sure that it is not for the our market even after i showed her the official letter from mini. now the new salesperson even pissed me off more by saying it is illegal.
