I now feel much safer driving my Mini. I now have two brake light bulbs instead of one at the tailights when hitting the brakes. The brake light mod can be found on this enthusiast site. MUCH brighter at the tailights when brakes are applied

Yes! If anyone does one single mod....this is the best one for safety's sake! I had it done by Mike of Donna/Mike on my Spring Roadtrip, and I am very pleased with the significant brake light power it adds! Hurray for the brake light mod!

Cheers!

I agree! Being an electrician in my former career, I came up with my own way to wire them in my garage to make them function. I simply snipped the foglight wire (#1) at the black tape so I had plenty of play in the wire (I never plan on installing rear fog lights), then I cut wire #4 in half about 3 inches from the connector. I then tied all three wires together and crimped them, then applied liquid tape to the connector. It's that simple! It took me more time how to figure out how to unsnap the circuit board assembly from the lense.

whoa, it can be done much easier than that!

Hey, me too. Just did this mod this past weekend. Easy peasy. I am really happy with the results and can't beleive that I actually did this myself. I never would have known about it or had the nerve to try it if it were for people in the forums posting pictures and directions. This is a must do project. I used this guys site to help me out. http://www.3forces.com/mini/technica...emod/index.asp

I agree, this is definitely the #1 "why the heck not?" mod. Frankly I think it was asinine of MINIUSA not to have US spec cars come this way if the rear fogs were unavailable anyway. And while I'm speaking frankly, I don't like the idea of rear fogs, period. I think they'd only confuse most other drivers. This is by far a safer setup.

For $12 you can get a VERY easy kit to do this safely (from MCO member mini-rolls) that requires no cutting, taping, or anything even slightly difficult. Just a pair of pliers.

The brake light mod is a total must in my book. My mod coexists perfectly with the rear fogs, even the dealer liked how it all came together. About a dollar's worth of parts (two diodes, which I already had laying around) and a few minutes and it's done.

Is the additional brake light already installed? Even if I don't order rear fogs, will the bulbs be there?

Thanks,
Mark

Yes the bulbs are there in each of the three positions of each tail light.

I will do free brake light mods for anyone attending any BAMA (Birmingham Area MINI Assoc.) events. And yes, it costs less than $1 in parts.

I agree, the brake light mod is great. Gives me just a little xtra sense of safety when I'm out there on those busy streets. For those getting rear fogs, the enhanced mod including diodes sounds perfect!!! Good job!!

Do you have detailed instructions on how to do the mod? I am a couple hours away and probably can't get together, but I would like to do it myself.

Thanks

I AM SUCH AN IDIOT!!! I have had my MINI for more than a year... why did I wait so long to do this mod????

Did the tail light mod today. I AM SO EXCITED!

Anyone who hasn't done this: Do it. Your brake lights are WAY brighter than pics show. It feels so good to have done this. And it's easy. A very satisfying process.

What the "How to" threads didn't tell me: All you are doing is running a connection between to wires in each tail light. Because you can unplug the tail lights, you have a very easy way to get at those wires. Instead of just adding a wire, you use a Radio Shack diode. You plug the two ends of the diode into the tail light plug right next to the existing wires, then put the plug back into place, and that's it!

God speed.
