Checkered roof

I have been wanting to check my roof for a long time so finally did it this weekend. What do you all think?

I'd like it more if you did the sunroof as well, but some checkers are better than no checkers.

Well didn't think it would look good just against the dark glass.

Interesting idea, only doing the sides without the roof; don't think I've seen one like that before. It is unique!

Could have done a perforated or full vinyl decal that included the sunroof. Either way, you'd have a black/white full roof, no glass showing.

ohhhhhhh... it looked like you took a pic with an old black and white camera. That MINI needs some COLOR !!!

Point still stands. You could have used full vinyl so no glass was visible from the outside and you could have used perforated vinyl to allow light through to the interior if were so inclined.

But hey... if you're happy with the look of the roof, then I'm happy. See ?

BTW... I'm retired from the Air Force. Thanks for serving. Hope you don't hate Kunsan too much.

I did the perforated "S"/checked roof. Black and white check/ Big red S on top. I was never that happy with it. The perforated stuff just looks kinda rough. Looks good from a distance, but not up close. Of course, I installed it several years ago, and it was hard to install because it wanted to stretch. It IS nice that you can see thru the sunroof as though there wasn't any covering.
Next time I'm going to go with the vinyl. Stealthy--l think it looks good!

Next time I'd like to try regular vinyl or whatever the stuff is.

Yeah, I didn't go with the perforated vinyl because of the life expectancy of it versus the full vinyl. Plus, I don't really want light coming through the sunroof for various reason. And hey, it's kind of cool to see all those checkers from the inside of the car.

I have often thought that I should have gotten a "brighter" MINI but I'm not a flashy person at all. I love having the theme of just the two silvers going, even the red S was replaced with a pure silver one.
A few have mentioned it being unique to just go around the sunroof. I had never really occurred to me until other had pointed it out. Although I am pretty pleased with the end result, even though I can point out some errors no one notices.
Thank you also for your service. Kunsan isn't too bad just boring and the MINI has to stay home in the states but gets a little rest.

I like your style, unto yourself.
I'm a chrome fan, and alot of MINI owners aren't.
Car looks good to me, not doing the sunroof doesn't bother me a bit.
I"m going with vinyl next time and I'll contemplate doing the sunroof vs not.

Motor On!

I got the vinyl from beacon graphics, they sent color sample of the dark silver I thought looked close. One of them was almost identical to the MINIs dark silver. Then I took the roll to a local sign shop and had them cut 40 6" squares out. As for laying them out I just applied them myself.

that sounds so easy, how did you get the squares to go all the way to the edges? just trimmed them beforehand? i think i would mess one of them up!

That looks great, the Mini is a "different & unique" car and your checker is also "different & unique" good for you for doing it your way. It's subtle, doing the whole roof wouldn't be and it goes very well with the rest of your Mini, good job! Very tasteful.

All the squares were cut 6"x6" and as I reached the edges I would start laying out the square where it would match the edges. The portion that was sticking over I just carefully used a razor and removed the extra material. It wasn't very hard once it was started. The hardest part was making sure they were centered on the MINI. I used a string running from the antenna to the front centering the middle squares on the string. Since I didn't want to mess with the antenna base the square is just painted roof. Definitely need to make sure you have a squirt bottle (I used water alcohol mix) so they dont stick right away and can get out the air bubbles.

Thank you!
There is that different and unique thing again haha. I just figured it'd be obvious not to cover the sunroof plus haven't been a fan of the perforated vinyls. I have always thought my MINI was tastefully done of course I may be a bit bias.

WOW!

I was searching for EXACTLY what you did to your roof and this was my first result.

I am doing the same thing. I have a royal grey roof so hopefully it still looks as nice as yours with the pure silver on top! How is it holding up after over a year of being applied?

I'm thinking of the same thing but in blue and white - like the Bavarian flag.
