I understand the '04 cars will be available with a tachometer that has a built in digital speedometer. Does anyone know whether this unit can be purchased and retrofitted to an earlier (2003) car? Thanks....

The dsp readout is great! I love it, but to answer your question I have heard nothing towards that, but I dont see why it couldnt be programmed.

I called 866 ASK MINI and spoke with CSR "Lisa"
Here is the answer:
"The Digital Speed Readout requires a diffrent wireing harness to the tachometer, no retrofit for 02 & 03 is currently planed"

She did say that just because it is not currently planed doesn't not mean it won't happen, just like the rear fog lights.

So if someone would like to get an online petiton going and call MINI USA requesting this it might just happen.

Wouldn't it be fun if we all just memorized exactly what our speed is at all RPMs in all of the gears? Then we wouldn't need the DSR!!! But I must admit, it would be nice.

I don't look at the speedo that much anyway....I'm, just having fun motoring... I think the DSR would be one more think to look at instead of keeping my eyes on the scenery. To each his own....

Every gadget is fun... and the ones we don't really use, still impress others as they check out our cars. No digital speedo on my '02, and that's alright with me.

God speed.

yah, as a gadget, id like to have it on my 03 too...but i kinda memorized the speed vs tach and what gear im in.

basically those critical speeds like in a 25mph or 35mph zones are:

3rd gear 2200rpm = 25mph zone
4th gear 2200rpm = 35mph zone
5th gear 2200rpm = 40mph zone

One nice thing about my Garmin Streetpilot III GPS navigation system is that it gives me a heads up digital speedometer, and a more accurate one than the MINI provides!

What is just as good as the digital speedo is the instant fuel consumption read out.. pretty cool!
