Polishing out piano black scuff marks?

Was casually looking at the door trim as I was getting in the car the other day and saw a horrendous cluster of scuff marks on the piano black trim right beneath the window along the back edge (closest to the back of the car). Took me a second to realize that the seatbelt flying back there after release was the culprit.

1) Any suggestions on how to safely remove the marks
2) Any way to prevent this other than GENTLY releasing the seatbelt and guiding it towards the back (I'll never remember to do this on a consistent basis).

Thanks.

Meguiar's Scratch X for the scuffs. I use the plastic adjustment bar on the the seatbelt to adjust where it sits when not in use. Adjust it up or down to minimize the release issue.

If you have a DA polisher, start with the lightest polish/pad and move to more agressive ones until the scratches are gone. The plastic is pretty soft so go easy.

The nice thing about the plastic is that the color is all the way through.

Thanks for the recommendations all. Don't have an orbital which I guess would be the best option.
I see what the local autoparts store has in stock and give one of 'em a try.
