That is AWESOME!!! I want one! How many flux capacitors does it take to power those things? Seriously, I had no idea it would be that cheap (and I'm assuming here, easy?) to mount lasers of that quality on a car. Great for car shows and other off road events. And, if you use them responsibly, (say, like anyone who lights fireworks on the 4th of July) I say go for it!

im putting lasers on my car now.. i think ill put em on both my cars..
ill make sure and use the ones where you can see the beam and everything..
it will be awesome and people will look at my car with awe. maybe ill get to run into some hypocrit saying im putting them in danger. i would love to be at a car show of some type and display that sort of creativeness.
and with a little bit of motorized mirror action, you could make a mini laser light show.
people slightly amuse me.

people are so caught up in believing they can eliminate risk.
i say just live your life. and take what it throws at you

I just gave you my take...did not mean to upset you, so I am sorry for doing that. I am not a condescending person and do not want to be thought of as one.

It's cool, I was a little frustrated earlier, no hard feelings.

I figured I was taking more precaution than most would, installing the switch somewhere only I can reach, so passengers wouldn't inadvertently flip it, mounting them outwards and at a 10-20º incline to keep them out of immediate trouble. Opting for less powerful (albeit still powerful) 30mw lasers, when I could just as easily have ordered 100mw rated diodes. And then I went through the extra trouble of installing IR filters, making the beams substantially safer to the human eye. A lot of people were implying I didn't think much about the mod, which was a blow to my pride.

Thanks for the accolade!

As for the mirrors idea, i was thinking of using a recycled power-mirror motor and control assembly to be able to aim them simultaneously / individually without re-manning your own 12v setup.

Or, if you're going for laser show, you could just pick up an actual laser show projector. The cheapest route would probably be to buy the laser widow by american dj, then modify it to house a green diode (or blue, purple or orange for that matter. At that rate you would have to park your car in front of some abandoned warehouse and throw a MINI dance party

My next plan (we'll see if this ever comes to fruition) is to strategically mount tiny mirrors all throughout the inside of the mini. Then, when I arm the alarm, the laser will form an intimidating 'security' grid to deter theives and look badass.

Do I think it's creative, that it looks cool? Absolutely. Do I also think it's foolish, irresponsible, and dangerous? Completely.

As far as the smart-alec comments...I was born in Greenleaf. My family (including 3 small nieces) all lives very near you, and I'll be in the area on Wednesday I know you were joking but maybe if you can see it from the perspective of looking out for the safety of your friends and family (or maybe not at your young age, I don't know I guess), you might at least see where I'm coming from, even if you're not able to agree.
Hey MLPearson,
I do understand where you are coming from, I guess it's just harder for me to internalize it since I trust me, and since you and others don't know me, don't trust me. But I didn't think that was reason enough to condemn, since I sincerely felt the perceived 'danger' was miniscule. But again, that's just a matter of opinion.

The lasers are being decommissioned this week as outward facing lasers. I am taking the advice of a previous poster, and plan on having them form a grid behind the grille in my bumper.

The security lasers sound like a pretty sweet idea. I hope you do this and that it works out. Can't wait to see.

Security grid. That sounds awesome. I can't wait to see that one. Try to get it like the one in resident evil.

So with the IR filter, from what distance would it be safe to look into the beam? Also, what wavelengths does it transmit? Obviously there's some green, but there'd be others as well. What wavelengths are the IR filters removing and how effective are they? You mentioned that it's a 30 mw laser. Is that pulsed or continuous?

Thanks in advance,
Ivan

Well I wouldn't recommend anyone looking at them from any distance, period. The green is produced at 532nm, and the infrared at 808 and 1064, and since that IR is poorly collimated (scattered divergence), it just made sense, even as a show mod to filter it out, it's dangerous because it's invisible to the human eye. Oh, and it's continuous power.

Regardless of the specs, it's a stupid idea because it's dangerous for no reason.

Just to clarify, I wasn't on 007 laserman there, I was razzing those who were criticizing him.

Let's keep this discussion to the modification, to the lasers staying within the confines of the car.

You know what's really pathetic? You would never have said that to me if you were standing in front of me. No threats. Just reality. It wouldn't have been worth your time if you had any brains at all.

I mean whatever, I agree they *look* cool. I just think the gazillion dollar lawsuit when someone gets injured is not so sexy.
I just love all the old testament, stone the non-believer types in here. While I am one for freedom of speech and believe that people can say whatever they want (no matter how dumb it may sound), it gets a little ridiculous at times. If this guy wants to put on a laser light show, let him. I'm sure he is responsible enough to know not to shoot them at people. Seriously people, if you don't like the mod, you don't have to say anything. Some of you say that he should be prosecuted like you've never done anything wrong. I wonder how many closet axe murderers and pedophiles we have in here? People talk a lot of smack in forums. Give the guy a break.

If it is as genuinely dangerous as some people are saying, then it is people's duty to say something negative, afaic.

Cool. Then I sure hope some idiot without as much knowledge about what they're doing as the OP (who at least seems to have a grasp on what he's doing, as opposed to some "oooo how do I do that??" someone who comes in here without a clue what they're getting into) doesn't decide to do something similar to his car and burn out your little sister's retinas or something.

Like I said, I *do* think it looks cool. I also think it's a really really bad idea. Not just for the OP, but for any other person without half a brain who looks at it, tries it without knowing what they're doing, and hurts some innocent bystander. I work in heath care, and I see a lot of things that wouldn't have ended tragically if not for some uneducated person (I'm not talking about the OP here) who did something stupid.

Everything else aside, you never know who you are influencing. Or how not-smart they may be...
