It was totally my fault. I totally screwed up and I got polish on the black plastic trim around the wheel arches.

Any one have any suggestion for getting it off? Would boiling water work?

I heard that peanut butter/oil (less messy) works to remove the excess film of wax that turns light in color.
I'm tempted to paint the wheel arches and trim.
Lexol Vinylex or Zaino are very good. White art eraser will work.

Use an eraser. This is what I use for small areas.

Since I finally got the was off mine and started using Zaino (Great product!) I have
been taping the plastic like you tape before you paint, this keeps me from getting
the wax on them, it takes a bit of time (not too long) but then I dont worry about
was, I still use Mothers B-to-B to shine them up, but I have become .... moved...
a little to the strange side when it comes to my mini.

Before you do the peanut butter route, try peanut oil first. It’s the oil that dissolves/removes the wax, and not the chunky, sugary mess that you'll inevitably be left to deal with. I picked up a bottle after my wax job with Mother’s about a month ago. It did a great job removing my “over-rubs” from any trim pieces and the washer jets. The only place that the white is still visible is on the molding separating the windscreen from the roof. But I think I just have to scrub at it a bit more. I just pour some in a cup and attack with an old toothbrush.

use a white art eraser and simply erase it off. sounds strange but it works-- peanut butter may work -- but i'd suggest the eraser.

Try this:

Bondo, Peanut Butter, Lighter Fluid, Mothers Back to Black, One Frog Eye, Fire Newt Tail, One Ice Cube and finish it off with a Paper Clip. If that doesn't do it, nothing will!

Very simple. I use a little warm cup of Dawn dish soap and a toothbrush. It will take it right off. Just dont get it on your paint. It will strip the wax right off.Hope this has been some help.

Back to Black is junk. It washes off fairly quickly and only covers the smudges in the black trim. Vinylex on the other hand, cleans, conditions and protects the black plastic trim for a long lasting shine.

You know... Zaino doesn't leave any residue AT ALL on the black plastic so you might consider saving yourself a little time/effort...

I am having this issue as well. As mi car is black I may well paint them when I need my first paintjob. Hopefully that is a long way off. I had this issue with the fiberglass top to the back of my Bronco. It looks sweet painted with the same gloss as the rest of it.

I did hear Alchohol wipes and a toothbrush...

Coopers4us,

Where does one find/order this Vinylex product? I want to try it, ASAP (before a local car show in early October!) Is it available at Pep Boys?

Thanks,

Joe

I think of this as a two step process, really. Remove the contaminants and then protect.

I like the rubber eraser trick for really stubborn wax. For dulling films, I would wash it with a strong concentration of Dawn.

Once I have the trim clean and dry, I like to use 303 Aerospace Protectant. It protects the plastic from harmful UV rays and keeps the black plastic black, and gives it a slightly darker, matt appearance.

Good luck,
JS

There's a whole thread devoted to this in Detailing 101 about getting wax residue off of the wheel arches if anyone's interested. I actually did a little experiment on mine with Dawn, peanut butter and 303. The peanut butter worked best, but you really have to scrub it to get it to work. I also think that oily type things are really more for long term cover up more than actual cleaning/removal of the wax.

If you REALLY want to get rid of wax buildup permanently, there is really only one product, and it's a recent discovery, but it works really well. It's called Autosol, and I think it's German. I get mine at Emmons Coachworks locally, and you could order it directly from them, or you could probably find it in really upscale car product shops elsewhere. Here's a link if you want to find out more.

Cheers!

I will order some from Emmons Coachworks. I found Autosol products online at a lot of sites, but not the plastic cleaner. It's definately German, and endorsed by BMW & Daimler-Chrysler.

I know Mark Ferguson had either painted his trim body color, or replaced the fenders. I'd be interested in having them painted body color, as they look great on his car. Any help on this would be appreciated.

Yes it is. In fact I bought my Vinylex bottle from them. Really nice product and also works wonders on the Leatherette seats.
