Anthracite Headliner - dealer install

So...stupid me!! After building my mini and getting it. I completely forgot to check off on the Anthracite Headliner. I totally wanted it. Its better then a two-tone interior. So I emailed my MA and asked him what it would cost me to order it and install it. Figuring that its only 250 when you order your mini. My MA quotes me on $1640.90!!! Are you freakin' kidding me!!! From 250 to almost 1700!! Is that all labor?!?!?! Someone tell me its a joke or if I can get it cheaper...or is it possible (with the side air bags) that I can install it myself?? Any Suggestions?!?!

Thanks,
Chuey

Think of it this way they are charging $250 for factory install and there is no difference in the part except for the color They should not even be charging $250 for that. But for the dealer to buy the part is probably $400 or more.

But having to do it after the car is fully built means lots of labor time. From taking just a small portion of my Clubman apart just to see if i could add some extra mood lighting i found it is not easy to get the covers off over the air bags with out breaking something.

It will probably take them 5-6 hours to do the job but many of the shops are on a set hourly basis so if Mini states 8 hours to do the job you get charged for 8 hours even if it takes them 5 hours to do what they need to do. I argued that point when i had dealer installed accessories put on when i purchased mine.

So is $1640.90 the correct price probably but should it be a lot less YES. And don't for get they are probably getting at least $125 an hour.

call a local upholstery shop...cost me $500 for a black crushed velor headliner in my 84 thunderbird...and the two visors...pulled it down, tucked it nice....shops that do custom work know how to do this..the dealership is going to farm it out anywho. Might be a bit more for the new car, but I don't think it will be the outstanding price they are quoting...that's off the wall.

i was thinking about the same thing. shops can custom wrap your seats, headliner, a pillars... just about anything. i wonder if anyone on the forums has tried this already. maybe even something like a nice dark alcantara roof would be NIIIIICE!

Now, you are kidding...He is fricking out with $1700, an alcantara roof pillars and to wrap all the pcs. you get with an anthracite choice will be at least double ot triple the price. alcantara is expensive and to cut it in little pieces cost a lot.

As a MA myself. I have a check list I go before I "take the Order", There is items which IF not order with the MINI from the factory are just stupid price afterwords, hence:

Anthracite headliner, rear fog, PDC,Home Link,Xenons ( hehehe, this is off the hook)....I think it would be more cost effective if you like the darken the interior to one color to use a professional dyer. Maybe will be a good time to just buy the A pillars if you do not have the HiFi and add components to the front speakers. :-)

I do feel your shock! I have seen the look on others when the price of dealer installation is after missing something on an ordered MINI

My rule is to ask for MFSW, rear lamp, white turn signals, arm rest makes more sense to order from the accessory catalog IF you have an anthracite liner 'cose it matches 'the interior and is a working arm rest @ $207 or less depending where you get it with less than 5 minutes to install its better. unless you have comfort Bluetooth and colorline / chrome interior. Check!

a lot of the audizine guys have done this in the past. i went to get a quote from a shop near my place that does custom interiors and they qhoted me 500. granted, my car was sponsored, but i cant imagine that they would charge more than 1000 for a regular job.

$1700 isn't ridiculous. I'm getting front and back seats done in custom black alcantara(back and seat bolsters) and black glove leather with the new JCW logo sewn into the front seat backs for $1500 all in.

I think that's about right for the $1700. I was quoted $120 for just one sun visor. So think about all the little parts you are going to have to pay for.

Instead I bought some suede and did the headliner myself and painted all the little parts black, including the visors. Took about 3 days and ~$130 for everything. Pics will be posted in the Gen 1 forum in a few days if you want to see how it looks.

if you're really set on the dark headliner, see if your dealer will let you re-order. my original was ordered w/o xenons, so I re-ordered with no hassle and no extra cost (except for the lights of course).

had to wait longer, but Clag got here 5 weeks after the build started
