Yeah, you have to remove the entire bumper. Then there are small plastic tabs/clips that you have to destroy your fingers on to get them off. Putting them back on is easy enough, just make sure they are lined up right.

On my '06 MCS they just sort of pop out in the back.

Press around the edges and they should push in to the bumper. You can then push them up and around to pull them out. I did the same for the rear-fog light blanker plate. Once you see it it will make sense.

I assume that you are going to paint them (I did but I don't have a pic handy).

Getting them back in isn't that hard but it will cut your hands up. I was able to push my hand up between the bumper and the heat shield. Don't know if it's the same on a conv. Ofcourse you have have to double careful if you've painted them so you don't scratch them.

I haven't attempted the front, but I'd also like to know.

no you do not have to remove the rear bumper. its just a bit easier to remove if you do. there are several little friction clips that go around the opening. the grills have holes that these clips fit into.

removing the front bumper is a must if you wish to remove the lower grill. you just don't have the room to work with.

Taking the rear bumper off isn't that hard, and it lets you remove and install the grills without damaging them or your hand.

i just happen to have a set of bumpers laying in my floor....

this is the inside of the rear bumper, you can see the 6 tabs that hold the grill in place....

and this is the front bumper, you can see several tabs here...but again, this part needs to be removed to gain proper access..

closer shot...
