Heat shields

Has anyone cut out the rear heat shield that is between the mufflers and the rear bumper cover? I cut out the holes in my aero kit and made custom grills for it, but my body guy is worried that the bumper will melt if we remove the shields. Any advice? Is there a pliable shield that I can stick to the bumper?

The mufflers don't really give off enough radiant heat to melt anything back there. My exhaust tips are the only things that melted anything, and they were literally touching the bumper.
