they use 3M. california law is NO TINT AT ALL on front 2 windows any tint on the back 3. but, they will tint your fronts as dark as you wish, you just take the chance. i had my front 2 done at 35% and my back 3 at 15% looks good and no issues so far with the police.
Hey there! I would like to know if you could perhaps post a pic of your 35% windows if it's not too much trouble. I looked through your gallery but in the pics the windows are always rolled down
Sunman,
I'm so sorry it took me so long to respond.
As I was taking the picture I noticed that the tint doesn't actually go to the very edge but I didn't notice it until today.
It was very hard to get in a picture. This is the best I got, the camera had a hard time focusing on the window edge...

Thanks Chili Cart.
It's probably good that it doesn't, this way the chances for peeling are less likely
At least that what I would like to think.
The 35% tint doesn't look as dark as I thought they would be

There is a whole lot of misinformation about window tinting out there.
First, in today's world of high-tech films, you should not use traditional dyed film. It simply does not have the heat rejection characteristics of modern films. Yes it's cheap, but you get what you pay for.
Metallic and ceramic films work best, with ceramic being significantly more expensive. HuperOptik used to be the only ceramic game in town, but now several manufacturers offer it.
Stay away from 3M films at all cost. It is a big brand name, but their strength is in adhesives manufacturing, not window glazing films. Check out the window tint forums and you will confirm this.
For the past year I have exclusively used Wincos film on my cars (manufactured in Japan by a 3rd party and distributed by Madico in the US). From all the research and informal personal testing I have done, nothing seems to outperform Wincos. Also, because it is ceramic, it won't interfere with electronic signals or cause any reflectivity or glare.
I paid $325 for a mobile installation (tint guy drove to my office) on all 5 windows plus both sunroofs. I did 20% all the way around. Normal cost for a mobile Wincos install like mine is anywhere from $375-$500; I got a hefty repeat customer discount. Most non-mobile shops will charge about $350 for a full Wincos job. One guy actually quoted me $1600 for a mobile installation of Wincos. I don't know what he was smoking.
As for the sunroof, it is single pane from what I can tell. There is no restriction on using any kind of film on single pane glass. If it were double pane (S Class, Range Rover, 7 Series), you should not use metallic film. The reflectivity may indeed cause cracking. Ceramic should, in theory, be safe on every application.
Good luck!

I use Perfect Window Tint in Costa Mesa. You can go there, or they can come to you. Sal is the owner and a great guy. Just don't accept his first price. Negotiate with him. You can get more price leverage if you pay cash. (949) 290-9224. Tell him Ryan from City of Industry sent you.
FWIW, I just got my windows tinted with the Madico ceramic tint 30% (more like 34%) all the way around. I'll take some pictures after everything dries out. So far it looks great and the interior is a lot cooler than without. The tint shop I went to is calle Rob Loo, off of Jefferson and Centinela.

ahh that looks sick, how much do you think it would cost me to do my front 2, roof, as well as my rear right (got a tear in it while removing a bike :P) so pretty much 4 windows haha.
I've heard the sunroof is around $100. For my five, it was around $145 OTD.
Just went to Sunshield based on this thread. It was a bit of a drive for me as I live in the desert, but worth it. Very professional, fast, reasonable priced. Most importantly, familiar with MINI's. He recomended 20% on the back 3 windows, 35% on the front sides, and 5% on the sunroof. $200 for all, looks great, much cooler.

Tinted...
So I finally got around to getting tinted. Having dropped the GF off at LAX, I realised that I would be passing Sunshield so dropped in on the off chance.
Hamid had a few cars lined up, but I had plenty of time so he agreed to slot me in as last car of the afternoon.
15% on the back and rears, 35% on the front two was the combination I went with - seems that's in keeping with what most folks have had done there. I can't praise them enough, his business displays the very essence of team work - a rare thing these days.
It's interesting to see how the tin appears different depending on the conditions. The below photo makes the fronts seem almost untouched, yet, from inside, they're certainly dark enough.

The large version (3456x2304 pixels) of the pic is here:
