Altering License Plates

Does anyone know how to alter license plates so that they can't be read by speed cameras but still look the same to the eye? This isn't something I would do, of course, but I was just interested if it can be done.

I know one say that works....you don't need to modify the plate at all...it is not too hard..but if you just don't speed in areas where you know there are cameras then your plate is like 100% anti speed camera and it still looks the same lol

no seriously it cant be done...sorry

You are better altering your driving habits. Mythbusters tried all the common ways to do this and they got caught every time.

Best method I know of is to take the plates off entirely. Less obvious is to ****** the plates off of some other car and mount them on yours. The above two solutions come with their own set of problems however.

In Alabama we are issued invisible front license plates.

I'm sure they would work for people in other states too.

I'd be happy to send one to anyone who sends me a SASE.

Both Mytbusters and Top Gear tested all the commercial license plate covers & suggested alteration metods on the net (celophane, cooking oil, special painted coating etc.) in an attempt to defeat the GATSO speed camera.

Not one of the products sold or the methods suggested worked.

The other down-side is that just about every state (as well as the UK) has some pretty specific laws prohibiting any alteration of your plate in that manner. It would be really bad to get caught trying.

The best idea I can come up with is to get one of those slave flashes for cameras that go off when they sense another camera flash firing.

If you located this right next to your license plate, you might have a chance of overexposing the speed camera's image.

Rig up a rotating license plate device that's tied into the speedo, and the NAV so I can flip over a dummy plate when it detects that you're speeding. Or just bust out a trained monkey from the circus and keep him in your boot to do the same thing.

aside from the photo-spray tactic (dunno if it really works), i just read an ad in a car magazine yesterday about a flipping license plate holder. basically an "invisible" case blank, then flips to reveal your license plate, operated by a remote. in theory, if you intended to speed, you could flip it, then flip it back when back to normal.

I've been dreaming about having something like this since I was but a wee boy, though I'm not exactly sure why I was plotting a life of vehicular enabled crime at a tender age.

this works for distorting your license plate when they take a pic of the plate so they cannot track your car:

http://www.phantomplate.com/photoshield.html

it doesnt work against radar or laser.
in many states, it IS illegal to use a cover on your license plate.

So like the monkey alarm we could have the monkey swap the plates too. I didn't see this as an option on the Minusa site but I would buy one.

Hahahaha...awesome!

I'll have to call up my MA and see if I can change the factory alarm to a Plate Switching Boot Monkey which I will then You-ify with a stylish racing striped fez.

really? have you seen one in person? i know of several people that have it and been with them when the camera snapped a pic but they never recvd the ticket.

i never saw that full episode. i thought they only used the spray... and they tried to speed thru to beat the camera which is impossible at sensible speeds. and wasnt the test with the covers a test to determine if it deterred radar?

nevermind.... myth busted

put snow on your plates in the winters, it works. Also just make sure it is nice and dirty and never wash your car in the winter, also helps.

small correction. Mythbusters proved you can beet the speed camera... if your diving a rocket powered car at something in the ball park of 300mph.

If you had a 300mph MINI, i think you should be allowed to drive as fast as you want

This actually works. A friend of mine in the Netherlands (who intentionally never washes his car) got pulled over by a cop and was made to clean his plates because the cop said the cameras wouldn't be able to read it. The drawback: keeping your awesome car looking like crap. lol
