short shifter picture please.

im on my way to purchasing a short shifter, and i was wondering what it looked like at its lowest setting. So if anyone has a picture of their alta, BM, craven speed, or anyshort shifter that physically lowers the hight, that would be great.

i dont think a short shifter actually shortens the shifter length... although it might, the purpose is to shorten the throws from gear to gear.. so it may look the same.

the alta and craven speed actually do shorten shifter height as well as throw.

sorry, i dont have a pic for the r56.
i can tell you this much, for the r53, lowering the alta to the bottom is too low for me to reach when im wearing my schroth harness.

pics in an r53 are fine to, i just want to get an idea of how short it actually shortens it. thanks, but i know the main purpose is to shorten throw, but as glnr13 said, alta and craven speeds actually shorten the height as well as the throw. would this be similar to the shifter in an S4 or a 911 turbo? ive driven both an enjoyed the lack of effort needed to shift.

i also plan to get a new shift ****, still looking around for what a want, something not to big, thanks but no thanks; no plugs for whalen, they looks great but are to much for my thoughts.

along with that, get redline to make a REAL leather cover for the shifter and e-brake.

My understanding is that shortening the shift lever (which lowers the **** ) is how the shorter throws are obtained. Shorter lever = less distance traveled, but greater force required.

if you want a smoother shift you should get a weighted shift ****, not a shorter throw. Shorter throw makes it harder to shift, like Casady said

i have my alta set in the middle height/throw. i left 1/4" of thread on the **** so that it didnt sit too low. still more than 3/4" threaded down on the shifter so i know it's not coming off and i've run 3 autox's and 3 track days with it. never came undone and the **** never came loose.

I've been experimenting with a variety of shift **** shapes. Some have been rather tall. I found the taller ***** are the ones that require less effort, in spite of the longer throw. I don't really notice the difference in throw length, but I do notice the difference in effort required. I drove from Carmel to Los Angeles (mostly on Hwy 1) with a tall **** (actually, it is more like a handle) and it was quite pleasant.

The place you want a short shifter is if you are competing for times on a course that requires a lot of shifting.

If you are going to do the 24 hour Le Mons, or even the 24 hour LeMons, you might want a taller shifter. The fatigue factor would probably be more important than the 1/10 of a sec. (or would it be a 1/1000?) you save on shifts.

I hope to post some of my **** shape experiments in a few days.

waste of money.....ive seen it before.

the realse point/friction point of the clutch in the mini is only like 1 inch in on my car, with a short shifter i feel as if i could fly through the gears.

i would like a **** similar to this, or i may just get this

I think that is typical. Not sure whether it does any harm (probably not), but I've had it happen on other cars. The difficult part is getting it into another gear without depressing the clutch.

any manual box, if you press the accelerator then release it you load and unload the gears. When the gears get unloaded, for a small amount of time the forces are zero and you can pull the gear leaver out without clutching no effort at all no damage. If you wait too long it will not come out.

if you keep a constant speed, ie, constant rpm's, you can move the gear in and out of the same gear, so pull it out of 3rd, put it back into 3rd, w/o depressing the clutch at all if you keep constant rpm's

I will be getting my craven speed short throw shifter in a week. They finally came out with a shift well cover for the R56. Tis what I was waiting for. He sent me pics of the prototype if anyone wants to see.

The Kartboy shifter is a quality piece. I just got done installing one of Tom's kits on my '07 Forester XT. I'll be putting one on my wife's R56 once they're available.

Keep up the great work Tom!
