Where's a good place to source a torque wrench in inch pounds for tightening the supercharger pulley bolts?

I think Sears has the Craftsman on sale now for around $7 to $80 dollars. I'm sure some of the other guys will chime in with sources.

Question for those who have done the pulley swap on 05-06 automatics. Any major differences in lifting the engine? In particular does the shift cable need to be removed or loosen?

I did a pulley swap on an automatic a few years ago. I can't remember if it was on '05 or '06, but know it was one of the two (I *think* it was in '06).

The automatic actually required a good bit of deviation from Randy's directions when it came to lifting the engine up. In particular, there were several metal brackets over near the driver's-side engine mount that had to be moved out of the way in order to raise the engine. We didn't have to do anything with the shift cable, though.

Compared to the half-dozen or so swaps I've done on manual-transmission MINIs, the job on the automatic took about 45 minutes longer, but it didn't require any additional tools or anything like that. Basically, follow the standard directions, and when you find that you can't lift the engine, look for the bracket that's stopping you and remove it. Repeat the process until the engine's up.

Just did the 17% pulley today, good stuff. Took me around 2 hours without the belt tool. Definitely recommend this to anyone hesitant about it.

You really need a dedicated "pulley puller" to keep the job from turning into a nightmare. Too many people have tried to use regular two- or three-jaw gear pullers, only to end up mangling the factory pulley and having it stick so badly on the shaft that they've had to cut it off.

As for the tensioner tool, the factory tool fits perfectly and makes the job easy, but I've seen people successfully fabricate their own versions of the tool, either by welding together pieces of scrap metal into the appropriate configuration, or even by driving nails through a board in the right spots to engage the holes in the tensioner.

Ask around at the local MINI clubs - someone may have a tensioner and/or puller you can borrow. I know that some of the retailers will rent you a puller and tensioner tool when you buy a pulley from them.

Having done a bunch of these, the Craven speed puller is the easiest way to do it!

If your car is an earlier one, you also need to remove some of the bolts on the right motor mount, and to get to those you need to remove the air box and ECU. It sounds hard but it's really not, and that's the only way to get the engine high enough to get the tool on the pulley.

Way motor works http://www.waymotorworks.com/ sells the pulley tool. I looked at the job before with one of my bestfriends who is a Snap On dealer. Needless to say he has a sick garage and every tool you could ever think of.....lol He said he had nothing that would have worked as well as the puller. As far as the belt we used a long prybar and a nail to hold it unlocked. I would probably sell my used puller tool if you are interested. Just shot me a Pm if interested. Goodluck either way.
