Here is how to take the ends off the MINI crossbars. I was able to have the crossbars powder coated black for only $50. I've had kayak and bike racks on and off them a dozen times so far and they still look good.
The square notch in the end leaves about 1/4 inch of play for the bracket on each end. Adjust in or out to fit the roof rack.
