How To Exterior :: R53 JCW wing install

Exterior :: R53 JCW wing install
Install a JCW rear wing on a R53.
This is a “How To”, or a “How I Did”.
First off, (excuse the pun) if you have a OEM spoiler you have to remove it. I have a Bentley manual so I was going to use the instructions there. First lesson sometimes the manual’s instruction leaves something to be desired. After the screws are removed, while protecting the surface, pry up on the wings mount while heating. Well after I started messing up the hatches sheetmetal I needed another approach.
The glue that the factory uses I believe is the same that is recommended to install the JCW wing. Its very tough! I had to come up a tool to soften the glue and separate the OEM wing from the hatch. Using a steel fishing line leader with two vise grips, I heated the leader with a heat gun. I taped up the area around the mounts and used a sawing action to separate the stock wing mount with the hot steel wire, while hot it just cut through the glue very easily. Wish I had thought of that sooner! I had damaged /dented areas to contend with now. Fortunately I had a neighbor that is the dent repair guru around these parts and I had him fix the areas up nicely. After rubbing out and polishing the area , I installed the little winglets that come along with the JCW wing to cover up the OEM mount holes. They come with a doubled side tape. I used a marine caulk (it’s supposed to be resistant to yellowing)with a very small bead to fill in the small seam between the winglets and the hatch . I also used this same caulk around the wings mounts afterwards.
Mounting the JCW wing now was simply using the instructions that came with the Betalink K2 (purchased from a BMW dealer,$$$ )glue along with the instructions that came with the wing.

Nice photos. Good info too.
You may need to use clear silicone calk around the leading edge of the JCW Wing mounts where it attaches to the boot. I have read where this cures any wind noise coming from those joints.
I too had a PDR guy fix my roof area from acorns.....they work magic for sure.
Post some pics of the wing mounted on your MINI. May do this myself someday
