Aloha 500 set for Oct 1st

OK, Boys and girls-

After many changes the lastest info I have on this year's BMW CCA and BMW of Honolulu sponsored Aloha 500 at Hawaii Raceway Park will be that it is a one day event in the usually car control and track with instruction format scheduled for Saturday Oct 1, 2005.

Many thanks to the BMW CCA Hawaii officers and organizers for taking on the challenge with short notice (track dates were scarce to nil).

See
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...47#post4414647
And stay tuned for more as it develops.
Hope to see you there.

This year's Aloha 500 one day event should follow the format of past one day events at the Hawaii raceway park.

See (read about past events)

Spring Fling 2004 (one day event)
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=22496
Aloha 500 2004 (was a two day event)
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=31765

You do NOT need prior performance driving experience to attend these.
All levels of drivers can benefit- the instructors are excellent and you can have more than one during the day. The car control clinic alone is worth the price of admission for most drivers.

Cars can be co-driven but it is better to have one driver for each car to get maximum benefit.

You must be a member of BMW CCA to participate (you can sign up for it at the time you register).

Send your spouse/young driver to this event in a MINI!

If any of you are attending A500, our tech session is being held on Saturday, Sept 10 from 3 pm to 7 pm at BME Hawaii. Refreshments will be served.

If you're thinking about attending but not sure if you'd have fun - Do it! I had a chance to run in the Spring Fling a few years ago in my classic Mini. The instructors were great, and I think everyone had a really fantastic time. You won't regret the experience.

i hope a bunch of mini owners are gonna show up to this as it'll be a load of fun. plus, i believe this is gonnna be the first time we'll have our very own mini instructors. ontop of that, this will likely be the last driver's school for a while, as the lease i believe will be up soon for the raceway park site and plans are in place for redevelopment.

i went to the aloha 500 '03 for the first time and it surpassed all of my expectations. although we didn't even get to drive the long course due to the slick conditions, it was still a blast to drive in the car control drills all A.M. and, for that day, P.M.

simply said, this event allows us to drive our minis like we'd never, or not suppposed to, drive out on public roads. and you will be amazed at what our minis can do. reading about our minis' awesome performance capabilities is one thing, but to actually experience it is a whole 'nother thing.

personally, i believe that i'm a safer driver now, as my skills in turning, braking, even accelerating are all improved. all these skills are very applicable to daily driving, as the conditions are constantly changing out on the roads.

i don't think i know of anybody who has been disappointed yet. and after completing the aloha 500 i believe you will learn to appreciate your mini even more.

hope to see a bunch of minis out there 10/01/05.

For first timers the car control clinic is worth the price of admission.

Great. We appreciated the work that went in to plan the Aloha 500.

Looking forward to this weekend and hoping for a bit less rain than in the last few days.

If the rain keeps up I'll just leave my trustly Bridgestone Potenza S-03s on.

Maybe we can make a huge wet skidpad in the grid area.

We do have contingency plans and a skidpad/car control is one of them.

it'd be just my luck that the last driver's ed event i attended had similar conditions as is predicted for this weekend. i think i'll be kinda bummed if it does indeed turn out that way, as i never have gotten to do the short or long track yet. and this may end up being the last opportunity for at least a few years.

i'm hoping if it does rain, it better stay cloudy all day and not start steam roasting us in the afternoon with clear bright skies and no wind. that's just like putting me thru the soaker and then throwing me into a sauna to try to dry me out.

if it is somehow cancelled, how would we find out?

Wow! 33 registered drivers. Great. Cool.

I count about 6 MINI drivers. (Might really be only 5 MINIs on the road.)

After that, next stop, Spring Fling 2006.

Anyone that didn't sign up can still come to watch.

kbseto,
Driving in the rain is good. Your true car control skills will be tested.

The event will not be cancelled. The only safety issue we face at HRP is usually active lightning from above.

Kapolei is one of the least rainy areas. But rain does happen.

SATURDAY:
Mostly cloudy with showers likely and chance of thunderstorms. Some thunderstorms May produce heavy rainfall. Highs 78 to 86. East winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 70 percent.

Heck, Sunday for autocross the weather forecast is about the same.

I'd bring some surf shorts and umbrella, towel and change of clothes.
Sounds more like going surfing than a driving event.

We run rain or shine. Wet weather training will really teach you some stuff.

We actually have 34 registered as Owen gave me another app at dinner. Then someone else called during dinner. I had to cut the registrations since we are short 3 instructors and our 16 that will be there are going to be stretched thin. I really wish Randy was able to get off on Saturday as it really would have helped us out. Much would have been learned from our MINI owner/instructors as there are 9 MINI owners registered!

Car Control Clinic will be rather large at 16 students, while the rest will be on track in the morning.

See you all Saturday morning. Get lots of sleep Friday night and no alcohol. Hydrate, just in case it doesn't rain and it is scorching out there. Breakfast is comprised of danishes, muffins and donuts along with juice and iced coffee. Lunch will be bentos from King Street Cafe.

Bring sunscreen, just in case, and have your wet weather gear ready.

Don't forget the bugspray too! Lately it's been calm (bug-wise) but it can get nutz with the biting bugs at times! :impatient

Everyone drive safe and have a BLAST!
