Yes, that is my chess playing son. He recently made 13 and was excited to play Susan Polgar. We met her in December of last year at the US Scholastic Grade level Chess Championship in Chicago. Robert had a good tournament and finished 2nd overall for 7th graders. He had a difficult draw and beat #1, #2 and drew #8.

Here is a picture taken by the newspaper

Robert is second from the left sitting in the dark shirt having fun.
I'm standing in the background next to the tall man with the hat.

I almost got to play her because they were short a few players but at the last moment after getting some coaching from my son, I was relieved by David Kohl who actually was one of the first players to win his game early on.
She would have killed me in no time like my son usually does. I can still beat him at ping pong but maybe not for long.
He doesn't like to loose and is busy practicing slams which makes him laugh. I play along and become cannon fodder.

Grand master Polgar comes from a chess playing family. She and her two sisters all play very well. She was the first woman to attain the rank of Grand master which is the highest honor one can reach in Chess. A GM is like a Chess dignitary and ambassador. Usually they travel all over the world doing promotions and spreading enthusiam for the sport. We are very glad and honored to have her visit Hawaii.

my 2nd grade nephew is all into the chess thing. he always wants to challenge me cause he's heard from everyone in my family that, "you should play uncle kyle, he was good when he was your age."

so, of course, my nephew is always looking to play me. and of course, i don't give him a break. well, not too much of a break, anyways. i figure if he wants to get better, he's gonna hafta learn from his mistakes.

i figure give him maybe 3-5 breaks, then that's it. right now i'm down to ~ 3. as he does seem to be getting better. always coming back with new opening moves to score a quick win.

hey minihune, how did it take for your son to beat you? my nephew just started playing ~ 1 year ago. i'm predicting by 4th grade, roughly 2-3 years of playing.

btw, does every school have a chess club? unbelieveable, that iolani has a chess club and a fishing club, but no surf club. at least not when i was there.

i also wished that we had a auto shop class. many public schools have this. hmmm...maybe i shoulda gone public school?

What is your nephew's name? We know many of the good players. This weekend is the Hawaii State Scholastic Championships.

>>so, of course, my nephew is always looking to play me. and of course, i don't give him a break.
Children that are good should play adults, they learn as they go and you don't need to give them breaks.

What time control do you play at? If you don't play with a clock then you might try it.

I taught my son when he was four and I could outplay him until about age 8. By 9 he was going to national scholastic tournaments. Now it is a joke if I play him.

Our Mililani Chess club sponsors programs in schools with volunteer teachers and free chess sets. Not all schools have a teacher to support our efforts so many schools don't have a program or team.

When we go to the National Grade Level championships each December there are roughly 2200 players from Kindergarden to College.

Hey kbseto you can play Erik808. We all can play 5 minute "Blitz" games.

Last week at our chess club GM Polgar played our 2003 High school champion a 5 minute game. At the end as both were running really low on time they were moving pieces about 2 or 3 times a second and still hitting their clocks.
Their arms were a blur and pieces were flying off the board in all directions. Imagine tossing pieces into a blender with the top off. I was amazing and kinda scary. GM Polgar won on time by a few seconds.

Hmmmm, Kamehameha had a surf club and auto tech. I took auto tech just to be with the cute boys! Can you beleive I took 4 years, including auto body and painting and at this point can barely change a tire!

I can!

We didn't have a surf club or auto shop at Punahou, but there was a chess club. As for myself, auto shop would be after school, long weekends and during summer, winter and spring break. We would work on cars at friend's houses whenever we had a chance. We did get a '69 Camaro w/ 327 to run 11's. My '80 Mustang had the stock 4.2L V8 removed and a 351W shoehorned in its place.
