[HI] got cheap gas?
no not that kind...that'd be a whole nother thread.
we all know costco has got the cheapest at $1.98-99. but costco isn't always available and we don't alll have costco membership.
i believe today when i passed by wahiawa mahalo at the corner of kam and kilani, i saw their premium at $2.03. i also believe the other 2 gas stations, aloha and vista?, at that corner are close, if not the same.
there's a similar corner in kalihi, where kam IV and north school meet. i think it's aloha and mahalo with a third one 1/2 block away. last time i was there a month ago, it was ~2.03.
east of kahala, forget it. it's a rip-off. kaneohe isn't too bad. last time there 2 months ago, it was ~$2.08 at the corner of kahuhipa and kam. mahalo and aloha again. hmmm, somehow those 2 gas stations always seem to be near one another.
oh yeah, and i somehow scored a mbna gas credit card that gives 5% cash back for all gas purchases from anywhere. so i figure using that at the non-costco gas stations will make it nearly even-steven with costco.
and sorry for the outer island owners...i know you get kicked in the pants with your gas prices.

$1.98 for premium...... sorry but not open to the public!!!
Only for military and dependents.
Tesoro offers similar 5% discount on their credit card provided you pay your balance every bill
cycle.
I am not affiliated with tesoro although I work for them......(FYI)I don't buy gas at Tesoro Gas Station
but Military buy from them.

That's funny Roy!
Now, if you really want cheap gas, you should see what the state pays for its gas form Tesoro. Those are negotiated contracts with low prices. Last time I saw the price list, regular was @ $1.59.

uh...i would never use "non name brand" gas in any of my cars. you never know what's in there!
and i dont fill up at costco either...isnt that just aloha gas in disguise?
also, i never fill up immediately after the big gas tanks fill up the gas reservoirs at the station. it brings up all kinds of sediment and stuff...not good for the car.

I used to buy it from Costco until my wife car started having problem always something with the tuning
and one of my co-worker mentioned he had similar problem, decided to buy somewhere else then the
problem's gone ever since... learned that Costco are importing their gas from Asian countries which is cheap
and passed along to the consumer.

yeah, i do think costco uses aloha gas as i saw an aloha tanker at costco once. unless he was filling up.
so, what brand of gas is acceptable for us? i've heard there are basically 2 refineries on this island. chevron and tesoro?
i know of some people who swear by chevron gas. until i get solid proof of their superiority and the supposed "techron" additive, i refuse to pay 10-15 cents more per gallon just for their gas. one person swears that chevron gas is comparable to one higher grade gas at any other gas station. i think that's full of baloney.
but i do believe in not getting the lowest grade gas, no matter the station.

I have not had trouble with any of the grades of gas (I tried them all) at Aloha or Costco.
Premium always give best performance and gas mileage but the others are OK.
Costco gets gas from Aloha.

Sometimes we talked about what does Techron additives and why you need them? Some raise the interesting point you
must to prevent gum formation inside the engine. Since they produce their gas in different way from a much heavier
gas oil compare to a much cleaner Naptha,What are the chances of getting gum deposit, Naptha or heavy gas oil(waxy)?
Your be the judge.

I guess one way to measure performance besides quarter mile times would be to fill up with a certain gas and check gas mileage under normal use.
Different brands adverse alot about what differences there may be but it is hard to really tell if it is true.

was talking to one of my patients who's a manager of a mechanic shop. asked him if he worked with european cars, and he wrinkled up his nose due to their relatively more difficult design/technology.
anyways, he said all the gas stations supposedly have some degree of detergent in their gas, as there are inspections/levels they must all pass. chevron uses their own special brand of detergent. i believe mahalo has a commercial stating they got some kinda similar additive. so i asked him point blank, do u believe the chevron hype? he had no real answer, and stated that he believes that gas is gas, as long as you use the recommended octane level. in other words, go with what you believe. and if you wanna add some additives, you can buy them separately and add'em yourself.
onto oil changing...he highly recommended changing the oil in pretty much new cars, even synthetic oil. supposedly, he attended some class or course on the mainland and reported how some mechanics found minute particles of metal in the oil after one lap in a brand new race car. enuff particles to clog up their extra-fine filter that just before racing was not collecting anything. he recommended changing oil at 1k, 2k, 3k, 5k, and every 5k thereafter. even if using synthetic oil. bottom line is, according to him, when an engine is being broken in, metal will grind on metal no matter how good the oil. then once it's broken in, the byproducts of metal grinding will diminish.
for oil additives, he swears by militek. his personal story is how his toyota corolla would make some faint whining at freeway speeds. after adding militek, he reports not having any noise at high speeds.
anybody wanna do a diy oil change soon?
oh yeah, oil...he likes royal purple and mobil 1. he thinks that amsoil has some kinda acid byproduct that obviously isn't good for your car. but then again, he said that all brands of oil produce acid. for serious stuff and deep pockets, he says get torco, which is racing oil stuff supposedly. but very expensive.

kbseto,
Ask for oil change to be our first official DIY event.
I don't know about changing out synthetic oil every 1000 miles.
Maybe every 5000 miles is enough for me.
Latest Costco (Aloha gas) premium price is $1.99 a gallon. It's cheaper than milk! (but not as tasty)

only just started taking close notice of the octane rating and miles to the tank.
i recently filled up with 91 octane stuff from mahalo gas on north school street. noticed that i got only ~275 miles to the tank down to a comfortable level of empty.
usually i try to fill up with costco stuff which i believe is '92. and usually i get ~325-340 miles to the tank.
just filled up with costco again today and will be watching closely my miles to the tank.

true, plus there's all the great eats in wahiawa. i think my parents were saying that midweek had an article on the tasty spots.
today mahalo and vista were $2.08. aloha was a bit more. mahalo has been doing alot of renovations. and they have a new car wash machine that gives you the option of traditional brush or touchless. anybody tried the touchless? i'd think water spots would be a problem though.

i think with the weather this past winter plus being in wahiawa or kaneohe much of the year, i've been getting both a dirty car and waterspots. in particular a dirty rear and sides with waterspots on the bonnet.
believe it or not, i try to wipe down the bonnet at least once in between washes to stave off the waterspot stains. i find that actually to be most annoying along with bird crap. especially with brg.
