SCCA Solo 2 Hawaii February 2004
MINIangelD -- re: the below, you've been driving a manual tranny way longer than i have so i, like beastmaster, would also suggest that you drive in whichever gear you feel most comfortable in. in my mcs, i stay in 1st and sometimes will shift to 2nd right before or shortly after the timing light and then stay in 2nd for the rest of the run.
>>Oops ... shoulda checked my PM first! This from Minihune, advice on shifting:
>>
>>"I looked up the shift points for the MCS. If you are in first gear, the highest speed you want to shift to 2nd is 42 mph (6600 rpm) while redline comes a bit after 45 mph. Sorry I told you a number way too high. For 2nd gear the shift point is 64 mph (6400 rpm) while max speed approaches 70.
>>
>>Given this, it is likely that for an MCS it would be reasonable to use 1st and 2nd gears during the autocross. Probably 2nd gear most of the time and stay off your brake, just use the throttle to adjust your speed."

I got that time on my third run, knew your best time, knew that I was just a smidge behind you, then headed back to stage for my final run smelling... blood
(as the starter is frantically waving the green flag)
Thanks for the results erik808, I'm glad you're having fun and improving your "dances with cones"

i was ready to go "***** out" on my 4th run but got all screwed up when i was doing the slaloms and hit the freakin windshield wipers! i couldnt get them to stop. dammit. that's another design fix for mini -- the wiper stalk is way too close to the steering wheel...sometimes i even hit it when i start the car and stuff. irritating.
i think erik808 had the same problem during one of his run....towards the finish, i saw his wipers go, too. heh.
p.s. -- "***** out" and yes, i dont have any.

>>Watch out Erik! t's hot on your heels!
===>I stated months ago -- in one of my gazillion posts -- that mini-t would catch me
. mini-t & I both started together on the same day in the same heat & were both coached by Panos P. He told me then that mini-t was a smooth driver and that smooth would lead her to good times in the future. The future is now!!
Okay, I gotta hit the sack. Bye

Thanks, everyone, for your comments on the shift question. If the autcross course in March is more swervy than fast, I'll definitely keep it in 1st and see how that goes. If it's another fast course, though, I'll probably be hitting second.
Regarding the BBQ fundraiser idea: I hereby volunteer for any food fundraising activities at future autocrosses, as long as all of this volunteering is done in the shade, and I am able to do my runs and fulfill my track worker obligations as well. I'm also a pretty decent cook so I can do that too, as long as it does not involve a huge mass production of something.

>>>>The big tent is too cumbersome to carry in a car. We usually use a minivan for transporting the tents and stuff.

>>ok, then we need to find someone with a minivan. hmmm, i know at least 3 people who have a mini & a mini-van! and they're all odysseys. maybe we can convince one of them.
Since I may not be ready to hit the track in March I can use our "beach mobile" (older Odyssey) to haul (to and from) the tent (if it fits), if this is really going to happen for 808-motoring's sake. I can't promise manning the tent (or BBQ) all day long but I can definitely help in the hauling of the tent.
If you are going to be selling stuff, is it going to be cool with the SCCA and/or the track? Something to consider.
