Beastmaster,

Will's popularity (or humiliation) has nothing to do with his stereotypical Asian-ness and everything to do with his sexual-innuendo name. If any contestants with names like Ivana Humpalot or Honey Rider are ever brave enough to expose themselves to national publicity, the same thing would happen to them. Their ethnicity, looks, personality, etc wouldn't really come into play (much) ... only their willingness to play along with the joke and be a good sport. I personally wouldn't want to submit myself to something like this, but other people have greater tolerance for such things. Fortunately, if we don't like the spectacle, we always have the option of not watching while the limelight is shining.

Respectfully,

MINIangelD

awwwww beastmaster, I know you secretly desire to share in that same spotlight, just as I secretly desired to be a cheerleader in highschool!

If you want, I'm throwing an AMerican Idol Karaoke Party next month....you can come and sing Shake your bon bon. nah, just kidding!

I know what you mean though about stereotyping...and I see where miniangeld is coming from, too. What kind of makes me wonder is, does William Hung realize that most people out there are only patronizing him and using him for a good laugh and not really thinking he's so cute and innocent (as mini-t does)? Like I said before, the last thing we need is a ticked off chemical engineer!

Keiki, I feel the same way about people patronizing him. I mean he has a great attitude, but people are really making fun of him.

Considering he's at Berkeley, he's probably a smart cookie and is using his fame to help pay for his education. I still don't think he can sing or dance.

Btw, he's a civil engineer isn't he? The chem engineer is my gf. She gets into CSI, Cold Case and autopsy shows and explains everything that was done wrong. She figures she can get away with the perfect murder. There better not be an insurance policy with my name on it!

I was a cheerleader in high school! Rah rah ree, kick 'em in the knee! Rah rah rass, kick 'em in the

...other knee!

- i dont think that william is cashing in on the sexual innuendo of his name -- "will hung"...his name is william hung although i guess he's being called will and maybe even prefers to be called will. in fact, it's the media who has started the whole "well hung" bs
- although some may be making fun of him, there are many who truly adore him for his great attitude and charisma. i give him credit for being bold enough to pursue his hobby turned dream...many of us wouldnt even dare sing karaoke in a public venue...
- considering that he's 21 y/o and it's probably the spring semester of his last year of college, i'm sure that school has been paid for already. this newfound fame is just icing on the cake...you only live once.

i'm happy for william hung and wish i were still in san francisco to support him!

Aah, but little weedhopper you forgot about student loans!

A Miata owner on the MINI board? Did you know the car was a flop in Mexico? Miata means to pee on or something like that. Well. that's according to Paul Rodriguez.

Some folks are laughing at him and some are impressed with his attitude and some are doing both. I think he is having fun with it all and it is harmless fun. He will do fine in this world as his attitude is great. I hope he can keep it intact when little people who are afraid to do anything in the public start throwing stones at him because he is "making a fool of himself" and is "a stereotypical Asian". Give the young man with a great attitude a break.

I saw William for the first time on "American Idol- the people that didn't make it."

He has appeal and is charming mostly because he is a unlikely celebrity.
He is more of an average guy who isn't afraid to go for it even if he is out of his league.

He sang his trade mark Ricky Martin song with four lovely dancers on national TV.
He says he is cutting his own deal on a recording contract.

Truth is the American Idol recording and appearance contract majorly benefits Americal Idol and isn't a good one for the contestants or winners but such is the cost of fame.

Really? You've seen the contract for the American Idol winner? I'd like to see that too! Can you e-mail the contract to me. I'm thinking I can start this somewhere else.

I was talking to someone who knew about recording contracts. So it would be more accurate for me to say that I heard a rumor about it. So much for "truth".
My bad.

My point was that the singers are not getting as fair a deal for their efforts and many recording artists do.
http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Musi....idolmaker.ap/
I guess that is show business.
-------------------
A search for the AI contract shows up this info:
It shows exactly how obligated the AI finalists are to "19" Entertainment - and the more interesting parts of the contract.

"I hereby grant to Producer the unconditional right throughout the universe in perpetuity to use, simulate or portray (and to authorize others to do so) or to refrain from using, simulating or portraying, my name, likeness (whether photographic or otherwise), voice, singing voice, personality, personal identification or personal experiences, my life story, biographical data, incidents, situations and events which heretofore occurred or hereafter occur, including without limitation the right to use, or to authorize others to use any of the foregoing in or in connection with the Series

I understand that, in and in connection with the Series, I may reveal and/or relate, and other parties ... may reveal and/or relate information about me of a personal, private, intimate, surprising, defamatory, disparaging, embarrassing or unfavorable nature, that may be factual and/or fictional.

Future Agreements: Notwithstanding the other provisions of this Section C, I understand and agree that in the event I am one of the final ten (10) contestants in the Competition, I will be required to enter into the following agreements: (a) an agreement with 19 Recordings Ltd. (or an affiliated company) for my exclusive services as a recording artist; (b) an agreement with 19 Merchandising Ltd. for the use of my name, likeness biography in connection with advertising, endorsement, merchandising and sponsorship; and (c) an agreement with 19 Management Ltd. for the management of my career as an artist. I understand and agree that, unless I am the individual selected as the winner of the Competition, such agreements shall become fully effective only at the election of 19 Recordings Ltd., 19 Merchandising Ltd. and/or 19 Management Ltd.'
----------
Those are the interesting parts - the contract is analyzed in much better detail by Salon. The article can be found here, and while it details the 2002 American Idol contract, the contract for 2003 is virtually identical:

http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/20...ract/index.html

I believe this is a lifetime contract.

Hmmm. VERY Interesting! This guy Simon is a very smart cookie! I guess you can liken this to My Fair Lady or Pygmalion as he is fashioning an Idol out of very raw materials. The contract is written to be very controlling and manipulative so that Simon can retain control over the character and his/her public persona. We must take into consideration that it takes two parties to engage into a contract and if the contract terms and conditions are too onerous and benefit only one side, a court of law would have an easy time voiding the contract. These people had nothing going into AI, but if they succeed, they will become recording stars who can capitalize on their fame. If not, they will still become household names and will probably get some recording work done in their home town. Or it may lead to other opportunities as it has for Jordan Segundo. He didn't make it to the semis of AI, but he ended up as a tv personality and does commercials and tv reporting. Not bad for a 19 year old.

William Hung is a stereotypical Asian to me, friendly, hard working, intelligent and just an all around nice guy. I don't know about you, but that's a stereotype I could live with.

Interesting indeed. I looked into the contract thing a bit more.
Some observations-
The AI contract is pretty standard and more or less protects AI.
Simon made about 100+ million bucks over the last two years from AI but he founded it so that's his doing.
Simon has no demonstrated musical talent of a performance nature but he knows how to reap the benefits of a favorable contract.
Nobody honors contracts that last for eternity. AI will release those performers that are not making them money- but it is by AI's choice not the individuals'.
A good outcome for some contestants is to do very well to get exposure and loose. This frees them up to do other work of their choice with contracts that they can determine better terms for.

Fun stuff.

My daughter got a unbirthday present on sunday- a CD with lots of songs burnt including the William Hung favorite with commentary by the AI judges mixed in. We talked about it over breakfast (my mother's birthday). Seems like everyone has heard about him. At least he tries hard. No regrets.

I think that's what makes him so appealing. There's an innocence, forthrightness, humility, and perserverence that is so unlike post-modern culture that it makes him iconic. For me, he's the highlight of the AI season. Encore!!!!

Will Hung isn't so bad. Just musically.
He's honest, humble, and kinda funny.
He's cashing in on his fame right now.
Go for it Will.
