believe it or not...

our next mini rally has gotta include a stopover at pahke's for dessert. hopefully, we won't be having similar conditions to the previous rally on the windward side, where rocks and sand are strewn alll over the highways and salt spray is filling the air.

well, either way it'll be worth the drive with a great prize awaiting us at the end.

does krispy kreme count?

my first experience with this stuff was actually recently up in riverside, cali, about 45 min east of LA. had a course up there for a weekend at the mariott. i stayed next door at the more economical days inn. and right next door on the other side was...krispy kreme!

basically, i ate krispy kreme for breakfast and dessert every day of the course. plus i got the yummy fresh-off-the-belt glazed doughnuts for free.

yum! yum!

===>Back in March, I had a Krispy Kreme with my mom right before watching "Myste're" at Treasure Island in Viva Las Vegas. Can life with my lovely mom get any better than that  ??

Awwwww.....erik, that's so sweet....just like krisp kremes!!! In November while I was in Cali...we tried to make it to krispy kremes and just couldn't find the time. I guess now that the one in Maui is open, perhaps I'll have to take a trip. They're best when fresh.

(I think kbseto is having withdrawals!!!)

krispy kreme's are yummy, especially when free and hot off the press! even if they're not fresh, a 8 min zap in the microwave is all it takes to make them good as new. my parents just got back from vegas and threw away 1 dozen of them b/c they didnt have enough room to carry it back with them!

Ahh, Krispy Kreme.....my daughter and I use to make a run almost every Saturday morning at the Orange one (at the Block in Orange, CA). There was one in Orange, La Palma, Torrance, Ontario, and I think Van Nuys but I didn't know about the Riverside one (must be new). When these things first open there are traffic jams and huge lines but in about a month the "specialness" wears off and people move on to the "next in thing". It's fun for the kids because they get the goofy hats, get to watch the donuts being made, and for some reason even the milk there tastes sweet. Fair warning though........multiply by two what you "think" you can eat. They are so fluffy soft and go down in a gulp!

Listening to the radio this morning about the Maui Krispy Kreme, they said that 200 cars were in line to get donuts yesterday morning. At the end of the day, 50 (presumably different) cars were in line ... they were busy all day! They think about 10,000 people bought donuts yesterday.

I have not yet visited Maui, and I hope to do so before I leave this fall. Same goes for all the islands except the Big Island (which I am visiting again in February - HVNP rocks!!).

I HAVE eaten Krispy Kreme donuts though ... here in Hawaii! A reservist from the mainland who worked in my office for a week or two FedEx'd a dozen here. They arrived somewhat worse for wear, but still tasty, especially after a brief jaunt in the microwave. I'm looking forward to trying them fresh.

I used to think that a donut was a donut...until I ate a KK donut right off the little conveyor belt. Holy moly. Good stuff!

Nobody mentioned "Fatboys" over on Republican St. (I think) in Kalihi. Great local food. Only open till 2pm though. They just opened another store in Kailua, over by the Starbucks. Going to have to try that one too - the garlic chicken is good stuff.

Any place I can get a good volume of food is where I head. Those of you that know me know I'm not the tiny type

there is a relatively new okazu place at waipio gentry shopping center with some onolicious garlic chicken. forget the name, but i remember the chicken. it's boneless, finger food sized like popcorn chicken, and ultra tasty. it actually looks very dry, like overcooked, but it will definitely surprise your taste buds.

in fact, the one gripe i have with alot of those garlic chicken places is that so many of them are dried out, over fried and so bony. i gotta fight to rip the little meat there is off the damn bone because it's so damn dry.

just this past week, a coworker showed me this fast food place in kalihi, i think on the corner of waikamilo (the street that goes right below farrington h.s.) and dilingham. bob's? not bob's big boy, just bob's. they got some mean ribs. i got the mixed bar-b-q plate for $10. killer ribs. next time i'll try their super combo mixed plate for $16. pretyy much everything is on that one. so good, i'd rather eat here than go tony roma's to fight the crowd and pay the extra $$ just for sit down in a restaurant.
in fact, this place was so good according to my coworker, we drove from kaneohe into town just for grind at lunch time. and of course, we drove in the mini.

KBSETO -- WELCOME TO KALIHI! bob's bbq has been in that exact spot for a very long nice and yes, they do have some great food. i personally love the hibachi chicken  there's also a bob's bbq next to ice palace...not sure if it's still there. oh yeah, the other fabulous thing to get at bob's are the milk shakes/malts/whatever they're called!

there's a place 5 minutes down the street called, PONGO's and they have a great guava chicken -- it's fried battered pieces of chicken with a guava glaze sauce. get there early b/c they're super busy during lunch and stay open until all the food runs out!

speaking of lunchwagons...i think 2 of my fave lunchwagons closed down in the last month or so. hula dog at kaisers/bowls parking lot right in front of the ilikai and hilton lagoon. and the kewalo's lunchwagon in the ala moana side parking lot.

i'm also trying to figure out where the tsukenjo's lunchwagon that used to hang out at ward, one block mauka of kapiolani, corner. for a while they were in that side street, then they were at the z-interiors construction site while it was being built. now where are they at?

haven't eaten too much kalihi as traffic in middle of town just turns me off, especially with the potholed streets. only places i know in kalihi/n. king/dilingham area are palace saimin, popeye's, mitsuken, mitsuba (is that considered kalihi or liliha), liliha chinese seafood, and some catering place my dad always goes to called aki's or key's? supposedly they do sell individual plates for retail, although from outside it looks like a warehouse or catering place.

ahhkyth, yeah that's the one. i love their mac salad, very mayonaisy. their boneless chicken, tender. yum, yum...i think i'll try to head on down there tomorrow for lunch if i got a long lunch break. otherwise, it's pahke's.

btw, yesterday i finally had raymond's newest dessert creation - haupia chocolate manapua. very creative and very tasty. it's basically a chocolate cake shaped into a manapua, filled with a vanilla/haupia sauce, covered completely with haupia sauce, and served very neatly with raspberry sauce and a thinly sliced strawberry on the side. onolicious stuff. all for < $5. only at pahke's.

pahke's also has the best roast duck!
and don't forget pahke's famous "secret" -- call ahead of time, tell them how many courses you want, how much you want to spend, and he'll make an elegant 4- or 5-course NON-CHINESE/PAC RIM/FUSION meal...you'll think you're at alan wong's or some other nice restaurant!
