Other than still having no power I guess we are OK.

What a day. Started with Flash Flood warning until Monday.

Emergency Update on the News (and a power outage across the state stopped many from having any power including TV stations that could not broadcast until one hour ago)

6.5 Earthquake off the Kona Coast and felt all through the state.

No fatalities or serious injuries have been reported at this time even though this was an earthquake with a 6.5 magnitude.

Most of the damage was on the Big Island and many schools are closed there tomorrow. Not as much damage on the other islands but on Oahu a third of homes are still without power after 13 hours.

I saw huge lines waiting to pull into the drive ups at most fast food stores.

And it was reported that no gas stations were open due to no power. One station had some generators and were able to keep two pumps open. Someone called that into a radio station and within 10 minutes there was a line over a mile long waiting. They ran out of gas in about 30 minutes.

Hope you are all okay. I didn't learn about this quake until a couple hours ago! WOW...6.5 is BIG! And I understand that 7 minutes later, there was a 5.8 aftershock. Be safe, everyone! Best wishes from a Cali multiple-quake veteran.

Quake was 6 miles from my parent's place. Fortunately, they were not on the island at the time. No idea yet what the damage is. Hopefully the concrete building was strong enough to handle it, but I'm sure the windows and glass doors and everything in the place is in bad shape.

I saw some news coverage on CNN this morning. The camera was showing a grocery and right in front was a HB/W MINI tooling around. Made me smile a bit. Glad there was no significant injuries or deaths.

Looks like the quake's magnitude has been adjusted to 6.7 now! I moved here from SoCal in 2003 so I'm pretty use to quakes but this one was weird - it was not jolting but a really long sway. I had just gotten to the track (for auto-x, yes we ran through the chaos) and felt my car sway for a while; in fact, it was so unnatural that I thought it was someone goofing and shaking my car. The guys that were standing by the Tech Inspection tent said the light poles at the stadium were swaying.

Lights came on at my place around 8pm and it looks like most of the people on Oahu got their power back by 1am. We had to go to the Pearl City area and line-up to eat dinner and one of the few places that was open.

Good thing is no rioting or looting at all the blacked-out areas, and damage was minimal, so all is fairly well here. Mahalo to all that checked-in on us.

Somehow I can't imagine a place on the earth less likely for there to be rioting and looting. Very glad to hear about minimal damage and injuries. Have an overpowering urge to come "inspect" the damage first hand! Best wishes to all islands from the Texas Gulf coast.

I was naive to think that Hawaii does not have earthquakes. I just got the news last night. Shocking!

I think the news mentioned that for the Big Island of Hawaii they normally get over 700 earthquakes a year many smaller than 3.0 or maybe 4.0. The whole area is geographically active and there are constant and active volcanoes for many years both on the island and just off shore (the next Hawaiian island- Loihi). http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/HCV/loihi.html

We also sometimes get Tsunamis and our usually hurricanes.

The worst thing that happened was having a statewide loss of power.
Time to buy a generator!
