Exhaust options for stock class

This subject hasn't been discussed in a while, so let's talk about what people are doing these days. What is the hot setup for H Stock? I've seen full cat-backs, mufflers replaced with Supertrapps, and stock systems. I'm curious if anyone has gone the extreme weight-loss route by having a system that terminates before the rear wheels and exits under the car. You could easily have space to use a decent-sized resonator down the middle of the car and use a simple turndown. Any thoughts on this idea?

I was thinking of using a 2-piece cat back system. The rear section would use a band clamp that would be easily removed in order to install a turndown. It wouldn't necessarily make more power than the full system, but it would save weight.

This worked the best of everything I tried on my 02 MC

cut the stock exhaust just upstream from the muffler, weld in a pair of flanges, so you can bolt the muffler back on...

build a short pipe to replace the muffler and have the pipe exit in the stock location, add straps to mount to the stock hangers.

17# lighter than stock, made 6hp and 8#ft over stock.

Wasn't too loud for San Diego (93 db 50')

Now that's exactly what I like to hear. A true low-buck, performance oriented approach to the exhaust. Thank you very much!

Did this today. Looks clean, sounds great, and saves 16 pounds. I'll hit a dyno in the spring to see what it makes. I'm not thrilled with the crimp bends, but it should be okay in this position in the exhaust system. I may also have a 2.25" pipe built (this one is 2.0") and compare them on the dyno back-to-back to see if it matters.

Great weekend racer solution, old school style! This will be my next garage project for my R56 Gen2. I'm thinking something as simple as matching SS pipe with about a 7" offset bend to match the in/out of the OEM muffler should do it (maybe aluminum if I can find it pre-mendrel bent) and a quality butt-joint exhaust clamp like this:

Just cut the OEM pipe just in front the muffler, no welding needed.

Crawled under my 2012 MC today to measure the size of the OEM exhaust. Boy was I surprised!

The exhaust pipe out of the muffler was 1-31/32" O.D. (just less than 2"). Not that bad, but I expected 2.25" O.D.

The exhaust pipe running down the center of the car and into the muffler is ONLY 1-21/32" O.D. (just over 1-5/8"). THAT WAS VERY SURPRISING! Again, I expected about 2.25" O.D.

I don't think I have ever had a car with an exhaust pipe O.D. that small.

I'm thinking a CatBack 2.25" minimum is in order with removable muffler delete. Maybe I'll take a closer look at the VPN 107 by VIP Custom Parts (or similar system) and add a flanged or clamp muffler delete...
