How about a GP w/aftermarket wheels thread?

There seems to be a couple of people already putting aftermarket wheels on their GPs, and since all the GPs look the same, and different from other MINIs, a thread seperate from the other aftermarket wheel thread would be cool. This could help some GP owners deciding if or what wheels they want.

Getting some RG-F's delivered in a couple of days. I'll post pics as soon as I have them on the car. -Sean

Those are nice .

About one, or one and half inches of ground clearance from the lower flaps?

Thanks. 1 1/2 ",..Thats about right. I might trim those inside rubbery flaps a bit, as they do scrape on med to hard inclines. -SPF

Did you happen to weigh the RG-F'S with tire mounted? I'm curious as to the weight saved per corner vs the GP wheels and the Michlen PS'2 that I have.
Thanks, Steve

Yep, The RG-F's with tires mounted weighed in at 30.9 lb's while the Orig. GP wheels and tires were a little over 42 lb's (don't remember the exact fraction). -Sean

Thats a pretty good reduction. Mine with the Michelins ended up at 39#+/-. Eight lbs. per corner is definately significant. I can see why you were excited about the unsprung weight loss. Thanks, Steve

Not bad. Are these 17 inch rims? 16? Looks like maybe 17 inch rims.

They are 16" BBS RG-F's. Those wheels only come in 15" and 16" for the MINI (I have the 15x7" version on my MC).

Beat me to it, thanks. The tires are Yokohama A048 Med/Hard compound. 195/50/16. The tire width is actually 12 mm wider than the stock 205 runflats. -Sean

I have a question. I know my old 03 JCW gearing would light up tires. I'm just wondering how 16in wheels and tires are with the new gearing. I'll be tracking my GP a lot and just wonder how the gearing is with 16in. I have 16in SSR's off my old car with track tires but they didn't fit the new style lugs so I used the stock tires and wheels in Oct. Just wondering how you feel about your setup.
Thanks

The gearing is a bit shorter now (roll-out is shorter), but not a lot. First gear is a write off, but I'm not doing much launching from a dead stop anyway. I've broadened my power band a bit so I feel like I could actually separate the gears a bit more. Every shift is about 400 rpm above the usable power band, but for tracking the car it would be course dependant. Having said that, it's entirely possible to keep the roll-out the same by using 16 (or even 15) inch wheels. Just select a tire with a larger aspect ratio. Unless your track is a glass surface, I doubt an 18" with similar roll-out would be as fast as a 16" anyway. -Sean

Thanks for the reply.
I've been thinking of going with 17's which I may not have any choice because NASA uses 17's only in the class. Thanks for the info. Very nice car by the way.

The real question, how many of you GP owners are willing to sell your original GP wheels to the "rest of us"?
