6 Disc Changer Wiring

OK, the window sticker says the GP is prewired for the 6 disc changer, but, I can't find it. I put a USASpec iPod adaptor in my MCSc and want to do the same in the GP, but I can't find the connectors? Anyone else try and locate these?

Ask Ian aka GBMINI, I think MINIUSA is still finding a fix.
Meaning they were not wired. Not 100% sure.

Has anyone else received this letter about GP's Radio??

I received this letter last Saturday from Mini USA.

Thank you for buying your new 2006 MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Kit. We hope that you're enjoying motoring in your MINI and appreciate all of its many features.

Recently we found out that a few vehicles which were processed through our Vehicle Preparation Centers had a Mononey Label (the large label placed in the window of the car showing the equipment and the MSRP) with an incorrect description of the stereo equipment. The description on the Monroney Label indicated that the vehicle has 6 speakers as well as being auxiliary input ready, satellite radio ready and pre-wired for 6-disc changer. This description is wrong. The stero has only 4 speakers and it is not auxiliary input or satellite radio ready. Nor is it pre-wired for a 6-disc CD changer.

We've enclosed a revised Monroney Label for your records. We're sorry for any inconvenience. If you have any questions about this issue, please call our Customer Relations Department at 1-866-ASK-MINI.

LET"S MOTOR

Jim McDowell
Vice-President, MINI USA

I call MINI, the Customer Relations person did not know about the letter. I faxed it to her. Today they offered me $250 credit for the MINI E-Commerce store or $250 certificate to use for MINI accessories. This was to compensate for the inconvience of not having the radio that was on the window sticker. I told them I really wanted the correct radio and mainly the connection for the 6 disc changer and be satellite ready so I can hook up my XM direct. Right now I do not know if they will do anything else. I will be talking with again them tomorrow.

Has anyone else complained to MINI about this. Please call MINI and let them know.

Even without the XM I still LOVE GP0948

I got my letter about a week ago....they also sent me a replacement window sticker. I also feel we should be given what was advertised and feel $250 is an insult. I have not yet called MINI as I intended to post as you have. I want XM and do not want to have to use shortcuts to get it. The car was to have been satellite ready. I too love my GP but feel MINI really missed the mark when the decided to:

1) not make the stereo H/K with 6 speakers and satellite ready
2) left out sound proof materials in the back to save weight

What can WE do?

I hope we can get more GP owners to call and maybe MINI will step up to the table and do what's right. I did not accept the $250, I also want what was on the window sticker.

We need to get everyone to call MINI and complain.

I heard about this when people went on MTTS.... they did not think it was wired for the Changer.

I put one in mine also and have my XM Roady XT feeding into it. Sounds great. $25 for the Roady XT, $30 for the Aux in.

Thanks for the feedback but for me I really wanted XM to work through my stereo unit (like the paperwork said) without having the small display mounted and all the wiring. Just my preference. I think MINI really screwed the pooch on the stereo system and leaving out sound proofing (which I will add).

You can never please everyone...some complain that there are too many comfort features...ie heated seats, ac...etc. Others want those things.. I think MINI did a good job with this car. I have my sirius plugged into my aux input and thinks work just fine.

Why a 6 disc changer if you are using MP3?

The head unit itself is capable of playing MP3. I have one disc with the entire Beatles collection on it. It takes up no room and uses no wiring. And once you accept MP3 (with it's 90% reduction in sound info) as your standard, which you have done if you use an iPod, then just burn your tunes to disc and play them in the stock unit. You will NOT hear any difference, and one CD-R cost's what? 14 cents? and weighs what? 50 grams? By the way that one disc has 13 hours of music on it.

We've throughly inspected the GP, the CD Changer connections are not there. We would still like to inspect a MY06 Convertible to be 100% sure.

In the meantime, we have already stepped up to the plate and created our own CD Changer wiring harnesses. These will be available on the website within the next couple of days.

The first kit is for those that wish install the DICE iPod integration kit at the HU without running wiring to the boot. This also includes an additional connector for those that with to run XM Direct or both the iPod and XM Direct:

This is an easy Plug and Play connection that "prewires" the MINI in minutes for use of the DICE, USA Spec (DICE has much more features) or XM Direct.

For those that want to have OEM Sirius or a CD Changer mounted in the boot, we have our extension harness:

Just recently we had a MINI GP running XM Direct, the DICE iPod kit w/ High Definition Radio and Bluetooth all together successfully.

We'll have the pieces on the website over the weekend. If you have questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact me directly.

Hear a difference between what and what?

Patagonian- a difference? between MP3 and iPod standard? I rather doubt it. They both use lossy compression to pack that much music onto a disc, and both use basically the same algorithim to do so. Yes, there is a difference between CDA and MP3, but that is because any CDA file is 10x larger than it's resultant ripped MP3 file. (and is a direct digital sampling of the original analog signal) And some claim to be able to hear a difference between vinyl and CDA. I am sure that is true for some. But for the vast majority of people, you will not hear any difference between MP3 and iTune format. And you can rip your own MP3 discs free, as opposed to $.99 per song for iTunes. And play them anywhere, not just on an iPod. My point is that unless you absolutely MUST have the track info scrolling on the face plate or NAV unit, it is far cheaper and less trouble to just play CD-R's encoded in MP-3.

And Peter Braun, yes I am from Northford, CT.

between CD and MP3 - there's an audible difference in dynamic range and I hear some compression artifacts on MP3's. Also, I said I use MP3 files on my iPod, so I'm not comparing that....I'm comparing a CD and the same cut encoded on MP3 - both listening on my car stereo and my home system.

I agree, the average person won't know the difference, but I'm spoiled after years of selling B&W and Levinson gear.

Mini has made their finial offer for the radio/6 disc changer plug mistake. I can take the one of the two $250 offers or they will buy the car back. So I am of course keeping the car. I now have my XM direct working thanks to Tom @EAS. A very eary install.
