I think I did a post on this already. Try driving at speed and pushout on the windshield behind the rearview mirror; you might notice a change in pitch. BMW put wrong windshield gaskets in some of the cars, easy fix for the dealer.

Heard about a guy in TX where the dealer had to swap the red mirrors they used standard CR, he got the whistle afterward my guess would be a fitment detail, where a "normal" gap catches the air just so. Can your customer pinpoint the general area? (Is there a chance its cabin airfilter loose or the re-circ is open, are they on the original tires? I've got a list of a million things on the MINI that whistle)

My noise was first noticed on my way to MOTD5 last May.
It certainly is coming from the 'front'. Sounded like it was really coming from in front of the fire wall (engine) and not the side mirrors. I suppose it could have been the windshield as indicated but not sure. PM me with an email address to get the clip. All I ask is you let me know IF you find the real culprit.

Too funny, Ya I did not realize until the next day how dirty I made it. The car is detailed 1 to 2 times a week so no harm no foul.
Sounds like BMW MINI needs to start aggressively noise proofing ALL these cars a little better

the whole car can go dirty for the week as long as the windsheild is spotless, I'm obsessive about my view.

Going to a good set of non runflats helps with the noise, for the rest, I think BMW would rather you by a 1 Series so my hopes aren;t going to get too high for that, but there's a lot of good aftermarket soundproofing solution here.

Mine makes the same noise. Appears to be from front of car. I thought it was the wipers vibrating but I changed to a different type with no change. I also turned on the wipers while the noise was occuring with no change. I have pushed on the windshield at different places (but not up by the mirror) with no change. I suspect it is coming from the air inlet cowl vents in front of the windshield (or something within the vent path). I have not yet tried masking off the cowl vents to confirm. My 2003 MCS did not have this problem.

I get a "howling/whistling" above 85 mph if my fan settings are too low. Switching the fan to a higher speed makes the noise go away every time. Kind of acts like a speeding reminder for me... LOL

The whistle goes away (in my car) when I push the air recirculator button to the off position.

I think TerryD & Dan00Hawk might be on the right lines - there used to be an issue on R50/R53 cars where you'd get a whistle from the HVAC unit at high speeds; there probably was a service bulletin about it.

There was a TSB. fix was for the dealer to add some insulating foam tape to the air flap in the A/C. Thought it was just an issue on earlier cars

Screeching noise in GP1292

As promised there is a video clip in my gallery. You can see the speed at which the noise commences. Any ideas what the heck it is??????

i get the same thing, but it's a lower pitched howl. of course the tech
1) couldn't drive at speed to observe it
2) blamed it on the piaa replacement wiper blades.

:(

Thanks for the sound clip so everyone knows the specific noise. It is the exact same noise that I get around 110. I also get it at lower speeds with a gust of wind. A couple days ago I tried to repeat the noise with multiple 110+ runs so that I could troubleshoot the cause (wipers, windshield, fan, etc.). Of course, I could not get it to howl. On the third run, I did get a slight intermittent noise and I pushed on the top center of the windshield and the noise stopped but I would not consider that conclusive because it was probably just coincidence. I did try the HVAC controls at various setting to try to induce the noise with no luck. I still think it is in the vent system, such as the cowling or fan. I am pretty sure it is not the wipers because I have replaced with a different type and also turned the wipers on and the noise stays. Hopefully, I will get a chance to do more testing soon.

Cool....now I am feeling better. At least we have proof and consensus. I've never had it below what you see on the video. Let me know what you may find! Meanwhile both of us will continue runs "on" "the Autobahn" until we figure this out and we can get back to the states!

GP 0142 same noise at 110 - 115 not as loud and as Iflymini. Replacing Mirror caps and adjustments did not make a difference. A/C on/off and changing the vent direction did not make a difference..
The noise comes from inside and it's funny we all complain at the same speed..

Man that is a horrible noise! I feel very fortunate that my GP is not making a noise at speed, good luck on finding out what the source is.

I had a chance to make three more 120+ runs today. I could not get the howling noise to occur. I was able to keep a 120 speed long enough to switch the HVAC controls to all different positions with no howling. It appears that somehow the howling has gone away. It use to be very repeatable. Maybe it was the push at the top center of the windshield (last week) that eliminated the problem. If I can ever get it to repeat, I will report back.

On my R53 i had that noise also but mines was becasue the previous owner had replaced the windshield with an aftermarket window and it didnt fit the weather strip quite well so i had to get a new factory window installed to fit right
