Interesting. Not the first windshield I've heard doing that? I really think it was coming from my dash on the GP. I've got a feeling someone is going to figure this out....eventually.....

My GP windshield was replaced afert the first couple of months of delivery . It was done under warranty but before I noticed the dash noise.

I am pretty sure the sounds comes from inside, the first time I noticed I was changing lanes and if I move the car position (changing lanes or curving) the noise it's quite loud.

Hmm guess I am lucky. Had mine at 116 yesterday (on closed course) for a bit and no sounds!

Today I was able to get the howling to repeat. While I had the howling noise, I turned on the fan and the howling continued. With the howling still continuing, I pushed on the windshield near the rear view mirror and the howling stopped. I reported a similar occurance in my 02/05/08 posting (#19 on this thread).

I am now convinced it is the windshield, as Matty125 had posted with the good link to the video.

In my case, when I stop pushing the windshield the howling stays stopped (at least in my case for about 4 attemps to get it to repeat). In Matty125's video the howling resumes when the windshield is not pushed.

Now the problem will be to convince a Mini Dealer ship to do something about it without them seeing it for themselves.

MATTY125....thanks for the video......that is exactly what I get!!!! Nice work.

OK, I departed Frankfurt today and got on the Autobahn and got the same noise at the same speed; pressed the windshield like Matty125 did in his video and it stopped. I think we have enough evidence to know where the sound is coming from. So..now....it's time to see if the dealer or MINI will address this.

Time to put my GP back in transit to Colorado and get the heck out of Germany!!

whistling Trixie

My '03 MCS (trixie) does it right at 105 without ambient wind. I drive I-10 through Cabazon (windmills) and high winds change the response. My GP1605 does it too - but at a higher rate of speed which I will not admit to. (It might be better to have a passenger push on the windshield)

Thanks for the Video Clip - I couldn't believe it when I saw and heard! I know that noise!!!!

The first time that happened to me it scare the sh*t out of me!

'04 MCS Works - 2nd windshield (from Mini), stock wiper frames. Occurs at an AIRSPEED of about 120mph.

I say airspeed because once I realized it was not a Mini meltdown, and started gathering a bit more experience (rarely mind you - this is FAST!) I observed that a puff of headwind will bring the howl momentarily, so if I am near the critical speed and the weather is not calm, airspeed not groundspeed is the trigger (I guess we agree on that one).

I decided based on less evidence than you folks have gathered, that I should probably remove the wiper assemblies if I intended to drive that fast, and pretty much let it go. There is one hell of a lot of air trying to go around that rather upright windshield at that speed. It has deterred me from trying to measure the car's top speed - but that might be a good thing...

But to see and hear of other's experience with this rather startling phenomena makes me smile broadly!

Has anyone tested my theory? Yank the whole blade assemblies?

I did not have the problem with my 03 MCS with stock blades and a different design aftermarket blade. On my 06 MSC GP I have had the noise with the stock blades and totally different aftermarket blades. I have also turned on my wipers during the howling and it does not affect the howling. I do not believe the noise we are discussing is associated with the wipers.

I concur....turning my wipers on did not remove or change the noise..

But replacing the windshield with another one won't make a difference as my original one was replaced and I still have the same noise.

Lastrega, you are most likely correct. I know you know lots about cars; especially the MINI so what do you think the issue is?

1) I don't know anything about cars .. I know how to buy MINIs

I am just sharing my experience about the windshield replacement .. it's a peculiar thing this noise but I love my GP and I can live with the occasional noise .. at least is not as bad as the one I had coming for the back of the car and the other one coming from the axle .. of course the roar of the engine is the sound I like the most !!

I discovered my wiper blades vibrating against the windshield at 90+. When I was at the track, I removed my blades and wrapped some felt around the ends of the wiper arms that rest against the windshield. Problem solved.

I was sincere in my feedback to you and not being a smart @ss. I agree; the GP is a great ride and I'm happy to have it as my daily driver. Going anywhere is a joy for me; always!!

I also had the 'rear rattles'. So far my dealer fixed the latch, a speaker wire and something else yesterday underneath the car. I will find out today what that was. All I need to do next is install the Dynamat I purchased last year as the road noise is just too much!

Have a great day!

OT reply - great dog

ifly,

Can't really help you any with the howling noise. No ideas or clues here. But when I went to look at the video you posted, I noted some of the pics in your gallery of your Weimeraner, Dusty(?). My wife and I had one for 10 years. He was really our first "child". It was great seeing those pics and thinking back on some of my memories of Maxwell.

Cool. Dusty Rose is not a dog...she is family indeed. They are GREAT dogs. I'm happy to hear from you and glad you liked the pics!

I have noticed the same noise at slightly higher speeds than posted here, and thought that it was the deer whistles (supposed to scare wildlife away from approaching vehicle) that I had mounted on the car becoming audible due to high wind speed . When I clicked on the video it is exactly the same noise. I will have to try some of the suggestions here the next time this happens.

got the GP out from her winter rest, got her up to 116 and the sound was barely audible ( FYI my GPS was open) not as looud as when my GPS was closed. The sound, however, latest only a few seconds..

POLICE Detector?

I decided on motorcycles a long time back that 100MPH seems to be the dividing line between expensive High Speed Road Use Tax (AKA, Speeding Ticket) and a trip in the back seat of the cruiser while watching some redneck tow truck driver looking at your "transpo", scratching himself, and all while holding a big piece of chain in his hand. And you are in the back seat with the State-funded custom bracelets on, trying to remember SOMEBODY who will actually put up your BAIL.

Good Luck!
