You haven't been to many track days with fast MINIs, have you? 924s, 944s (and most 911s unless they are driven well) fall like wheat before the scythe. I haven't been able to figure out what to do about those pesky GT3 Cup cars though. Those guys are fast!

mbcoops, freedom never comes at the expense of others freedoms. If it does, it is no longer a freedom. Our freedom of speech is something I will defend. However, part of defending it is knowing where the line is and respecting that line.

People should be able to attend any public event without fear of being humiliated, intimidated, or harassed.

??? are you talking about driver's education things or real racing?

Same cars, same driver

Or drivers with different experience levels?

I know nothing about different classes in car racing but if this were true, why are MINIs not in the same class in the Rolex series? or the times a bit different?

Point was that MINI owners feel like they need to bring down porsche owners to their implied (not actual) level because the cars are better. They're better. Sorry. They are. Deal with it. Your MINI is awesome, and so is mine, and on your track days I bet you're a superstar, but hmmmmmmmm why don't we see any MINIs in GT? Oh right, they're not as good platforms for racecars.

That's the address for the track at Pahrump. They will probably have a list of instructors.

Sad truth is that it does. It's not right, but it does. I'm not defending the offenders in this case, but I am not crying about it, either. It makes sense to me for the reasons listed above, and had I been the porsche driver, I'd understand it, too. I'd be angry and do something about it, but to think that we could live in a world where these things don't exist, or to think the fact that you own a MINI puts you on a moral highground is not realistic. I know I'm a cynic.

Here's the other fun part to think about. Maybe 1 or 2 people in this thread ACTUALLY know what happened and what was said. That means everything else is pointless banter. Guilty.

Not true. Read the post. My comments were directed at the silliness of having a Porsche in a MINI race and having said Porsche owner stuff it into the wall.

I like Porsches. They are too expensive for me to track, but hey, that's what my MINI's for.

Listen, guys and gals, I'd love to hang around and be more obnoxious by pointing out the misquotes, lack of logic, reminding people who were not there to stick it and all the other fun stuff that this thread will spin off, but I gotta go. Have fun. I'll check back later.

Cheers,
Sid

Uhmm OK ... so thats a whole bunch of people with different cars with different levels of driving expertise.

So somebody with a "Fast" MINI can drive faster around a track than some balding middle-aged guy with a 911 who is afraid of scratching is $100K car.

So what?

You didn't answer my question ... same cars ... same driver ... which one is faster around the track ... and btw, when you talk about "fast" MINIs you know that means modded quite a bit. Now add the same mods to the 944 or 911 ... Add the CAI and headers and catbacks, etc.

I'm not trying to be cute about this but when someone says:

You haven't been to many track days with fast MINIs, have you? 924s, 944s (and most 911s unless they are driven well) fall like wheat before the scythe.

That is a totally meaningless statement if your comparing apples and oranges ... compare the cars with the same driver and then what happens? (and OEM to OEM or modded to modded) ...

Go over to Rennlist and read about people with the lowly low-end P-cars bragging about how they smoked some GT3s around some track ... until someone reminds them they are in the novice classes or whatever the classes are the drivers of the GT3s dont know what they are doing.

With all due respect ... I'm just looking for comparative data (same driver expertise) ... not blanket statements with unequal driver expertise. The way you wrote that gives people an impression that is not comparing equals situations.

I guess at the very least we know which jackass should not be invited or welcomed to any future MINI events

No matter your feelings or the legitimacy you handled the situation crudely and inconsiderately. you not only offended the mans family you offended the entire MINI community by representing us as you did yourself.....and without apology to either!!

If it was the AMVIV track day, it wasn't a RACE. Don't know why that should so hard to figure out.

A race is an organized competition event. A track day is being allowed to drive your car on a track, and it's not meant to be a competition.

Other Sid -

Step off your soap box for a bit. You're flopping at the mouth and coming off really pretentious. This isn't a thread for you to flex your "uber-fantastic track skills and knowledge"... it's about respect and class, which ironically you seem to lack as of the moment.

What the good doctor was getting at was the fact that it was shameful to him and to many other mini owners that someone would be in the crowd saying crass and unnessesary comments.

Who cares what the comments were... or whether or not they thought they were justified? Who cares if the guy planted his Porche into a wall or drove it like a champ? None of those things matter when it comes to being decent to people.

As a mini owner, you don't just represent yourself. You represent mini owners everywhere, and as you can already tell from most responses to this thread, most mini owners don't stand for this mis-representation.

Stop focusing on the tree of Porche vs. mini and realize we're talking about the forest of mini owners respecting people. All people.

I would not call you a cynic mbcoops. Sure, stuff happens. How one reacts to it is the only real measure we have. Me, I like to try and balance things out when possible. No reason why people who get treated badly, for no real reason, to have to go away thinking everyone is that way.

Gromit101, thank you. It is a start. I'll do this by myself, if need be. I do feel that strongly about it. I am not asking anyone else to help. If you feel the urge to, I won't stop you. All I ask is for some information to help track down these folks.

It was a race. The first MINI Cooper Challenge of 2007.
From the website: http://www.minidriving.com/

You can find the schedule for upcoming events as well as the quote siddhartha posted above.

Given that it was a race event (not during the open track time), confusion on the additional car is understandable.

Something would seem amiss then. An explaination from the track or the event organizers would be called for.

However, as was posted above, free speech or not, class (or the lack of it) shows.

It was a Phil Wicks driving school, with a race (or races) interspersed throughout the day. I'm not sure how many races there were, I wasn't there. The AMVIV committee had nothing to do with the track, Phil just scheduled his event to be in conjuction with AMVIV.

From someone that was at the track, the people around me seemed more confused. There were a lot of questions of why the car was out there. I'll admit that I thought it was a pace car or camera car.

Obnoxious behavior is never acceptable, be it at a World Cup soccer match, an NFL game, Formula One race or even our lowly amateur track sessions. Showing disrespect (and worse) because someone is different or uses different equipment is immature, and shouldn't be tolerated by anyone. This incident sounds like the automotive equivalent of a hate crime. What motivations could anyone involved possibly attempt to cite to justify this kind of behavior?

Act your age, be respectful of others and their property. The fun will come for all participants when everyone is treated with decency.

No matter the make, model or year of car...

there is no reason to be insulting.

As far as the Porshce being on the track, that's not Tims call, that's Phils call, and Jerry, I actually agree with you! But Tim shouldn't be called to fault for a decision that Phil made. It's Phils race series, his rules, his decisions. Tim isn't the one who set policy about what cars are on the track when. If he had been a volenteer instructor and had cracked up a Mini, would it have been any different? Not to me..... Phil has issues with his race series. Events like this bring them up.

As far as him having a bad day and wrecking his car, I don't think any of us need to tell him whatever he tried didn't work out. That's pretty obvious.

All the Porsche vs Mini comments are a bit off topic and don't warrnet comment.

Matt
