This is in the running for dumbest thread on NAM IMO. Did people really get so upset that they wrote emails? It's a little joke....did you not learn to get over things. Geez...have some confidence in yourself and don't let a CARTOON get you so riled up that you send upset emails. It doesnt even say what the guy whispered!!

It's funny how insecure people are about themselves and what others think....and are willing to "fight" for themselves the instant they feel insulted by even the smallest things. Get over it

also...extreme injustice? yah ok....

Not I, I saw it for what it was IMHO funny that it even got started, as I said in my first post " Don't be hate-in" (sorry for the spelling, I'm Scottish an that makes me whiter then white. )

Ah, but what is being done to the comic falls pretty much under parody, which allowances are made for (fair use).

This comic strip should also be offensive to gays and lesbians. It reflects how society still thinks that calling something "gay" is derogatory and a negative reflection on that thing.

Did I miss something? The comic didn't say that the guy driving the Mini was gay. Sheesh people are so touchy. Any offended gays & Mini drivers need to get over themselves because the word GAY was not said & the more I read it, gay was not even inferred. MBE the comic guy said the Mini driver was cool or stupid or cheesy or hung or too fat to be driving a Mini MBE the obese should be offended yep the more I read it, I bet he said fat

I've never had anyone personally say anything to me negative about me owning a MINI but if they did I would do what I did when I saw this cartoon, laugh... (in a very condescending manner). IF the comic was inferring that MINI owners are gay, then what does it say about the writer's own insecurities and tendency to stereotype? So I don't think it's even worth getting angry about, I have pity for such pathetic individuals.

I missed that part too. There's no mention of anything specific there, other than a "blue MINI Cooper S". For all we know he could've said guys who drive MINI's are the coolest ever, or the biggest Forum nerds, or always married with kids. LOL

I just think it's funny people assume it's bad... why is it always bad... can't people assume good in anyone anymore... maybe the comic is a psycological expirement... and they are reading this very thread...

when I saw it I thought nothing bad... in fact I already posted what I thought so... yeah... LOL

>Baldo by Hector D. Cantu and Carlos Castellanos

Baldo is our first comic strip that features Latino characters and themes. Writer Hector Cantú and artist Carlos Castellanos have given us a new comic strip whose warmth and gentle humor will appeal to all.<

"warmth and gentle humor will appeal to all" ???

He isn't being very good at his intent

MAYBE he said the driver was "LATINO" ...
I have seen a mini with "dingle berrys, Chrome spokes with akinny tires, really low, velour interior, 12 air freshiners, "vato" car club sign in the back window, 4 kids not in car seats......

But I am sure he didnt want to imply a steriotype

This is sain in fun JUST like the comic !

It never says the word gay. This would be just as offensive to fat people, tall people, smart people....all those words fit into the blank bubble just as well as the word 'gay'. Get over yourself.

But the intent of the strip is pretty clear, from the reference of the traditional masculine color of blue.

That seems to be quite a stretch....its not even the color blue that is usually given to the boy-girl color distinction. It seems to me that he just picked a random color.

Not that the comic strip has me all wound up, but I do find it to be the kind of thing that is feeding the incorrect stereotype regarding MINI Cooper drivers (how did that ever get started, btw?).

The authors were attempting to make a clever inference. Anyone who doesn't feel they were inferring that MINIs are Gay Cars is rrrrrrrrreally poor at reading between the lines. Gromit is dead on when he points out the reason they used the color most often associated with masculinity.

But hey, if you don't read it that way or if the stereotype doesn't offend you, good for you !

Yup, and i usually see light blues rather than the blue on the MINI. You will also notice that the artist is sticking to a very tight color limit as many comics do. If he made the mini yellow....he would have had to make the characters hair yellow. You will notice that the MINI's bodycolor and tire color are just colors already being used in coloring the characters. It's pretty common for comic artists to do that.

Having done a search for "baby boy nursery" on google image...you will find lots of things in the color that many people call "baby blue"

Do you really care what others think? Seriously?

It's pretty obvious where it comes from...the car is very round with big cartoonish round headlights...its nice and small and comes in fun colors. It's a CUTE stylish car. Yes, its got a great engine and superb suspension...but no matter how much people hate to admit it...the car has a cute stylish exterior/demeanor. And no...adding an aero grill and tinted windows doesnt make it un-cute despite what people say on here. It's still just as cute..

Much like the beetle, this leads to it being labeled as a 'gay' or 'girly' car. There is no escaping that....and furthering the stereotype isnt going to change anything. You drive a cute car that happens to be a sport car. Enjoy it, and dont get upset if someone thinks its girly.

There is no "way" to read the comic, as the 3rd pane is blank, and thus leaves the reader to insert their own fears/paranoia/stereotypes.

If you read the next day's comic, Baldo dreams of a Candy Red '62 Chevy Impala with a 350 crate engine [because the car came with one anyway ]. Care to analyze this tidbit?

I don't like to be stereotyped in ANY way, do you ? Do you think the authors would like to be stereotyped as lazy, just because they're Hispanic ?

Sorry, I never see "gay" or "girly" when I see a MINI Cooper.

So there's two things we disagree on, I guess.

I dont like it...of course not. But i can easily get over it rather than get upset and send emails to someone about a comic that doesnt even say any word like 'gay' or 'girly'

Just because you dont see it doesnt meant that others don't. A large majority of people see it as a girly car....you asked where the stereotype came from and that's it. Simple as that. There is no denying it.

A "large majority" ? You mean like 70 or 80 percent ? What, you took a poll ? I'd say you're making a pretty foolish assumption based on your own views.

And if people get upset over being stereotyped enough to e-mail the author, what's it to you ? Why would that bother you ? We're not taking up your time or putting you out in any way, are we ?
