Not Sure What To Do

I was about to go to bed (probably should have a long time ago), but before doing so I glanced outside. At this point I saw something written on the window of my Hyundai. Before I continue let me explain what happened yesterday night. I received a call around midnight. I thought it was my Dad (yep...it's not uncommon for us to have conversations at that time of night), so I answered it without checking the caller id. Well, it wasn't my Dad; it was someone disguising their voice. The call was offensive and very disturbing. What's more disturbing is the fact that I live in a small town where everyone knows everyone...and everyone knows where everyone lives. Especially if you happen to have the only MINI for a 20-mile radius, and that MINI is parked in front of your house which happens to be on one of the two major streets that make up the town. I'm a teacher, and I honestly don't remember making any students mad, but I suppose it's possible. I've definitely never had anyone talk to me this way, but it’s obvious this person knew who I was...yes...it was creepy. Anyway, back to me glancing outside. My Hyundai has been shoe polished. It says different things. On the front window it says, "LUCKY IT'S NOT THE COOP!" I'm furious at this point. I could be wrong, but I'm almost convinced the two are connected. I want it stopped now. Would it be strange for me to report this to the police tomorrow?

Call the Cops and have them trace the call from the other night. You pay taxes its about time you used those over paid POS's for something.

request the police or the sheriff to cruise by a few times each night. In the small towns I have lived in, these kinds of requests were always honored

I would call the cops - and get a police report.
It's good to have these sort of things on record and you might not be the only one that this has happened to -- could be a way of tracking down the idiot. I agree with billie, if you are concerned, do ask them to do drive by(s.)
Make sure you take pictures or video of the vandalism in the day light to document it for yourself.
Good Luck with everything and if it helps -- I'm sure whoever reads your post will be wishing you the best and sending good vibes your way and to your MINi and the Hyundai!

Call the cops, tracing the call should not be a problem for them...even if the miscreants used caller id blocking.

If that gets nowhere & this continues to be a problem, set up a motion activated camera. That has worked on more than one occasion.

Hey Minisupercooper,

I agree with the above posts, except for the negative attitudes some of the posters have towards the police...

IMO, the police, as with teachers, don't make enviable incomes, but provide invaluable services in our society. Give the police a break! If you guys want to bellyache about professions/duties/earnings-- ask yourselves what valuable function tonight's Superbowl provides ?

BTW, I am not a member of law enforcement.

Good Luck, MinSuperCooper.

I called another teacher this morning to get his take on it. He says this happens all the time. It's just part of the job. He's been toilet papered, shoe polished, paint balled, and prank called countless times. He said not to worry about it, but I am still tempted to called the police tomorrow.(office isn't open today. lol ...unless I call the emergency number, which I guess will patch me through to his car some how, but I'm not about to do that over shoe polish.) The police chief's daughters are in band, so hopefully I can talk to him. Maybe he'll have people drive by every now and then. I think they watch pretty close anyway. They're not dumb. A teacher's MINI in a small town is an obvious target. One night I walked outside to fiddle with the MINI some. I can't remember what I was doing, but a cop drove by. As soon as he saw me he pulled over and started watching. It bothered me at first. Then I realized he didn't think it was me. When he saw it was me, he went on about his business. Hopefully, there aren't any kids brave enough to touch the MINI. Grrrrrr...

That is one of the many reasons I think the teaching profession absolutely sucks. Most of these kids grow up in their "homes" like total barbarians who have no sense of respect for anyone but themselves. Some of these rugrats become vengeful when the teacher gives them a bad grade or something. be careful! Today is show polishing your windshield, tomorrow it could be bodily harm against yourself.

Think about long and hard and see if this is the kind of life you want to have. If you are willing to have your property vandalized by disgrunted students and then again the possibility of one of them inflicting violence on you. I would have bailed out a long time ago, but that is me.

Don't be afraid to report these acts to the police. In my mind anyone who is willing and fearless to trespass private property to vandalize it, will not be afraid to inflict bodily harm on the owner of said property.

We live in rough times and unfortunately these kids have never received the education and guidance they need at home. Shame this on BAD parents. There are people that are ill fitted to be parents!

As some here have already said, notify the police. In the event you receive another one of "those" phone calls, you can enter *69 after the phone call has ended and it may tell you the number of your last incoming call.

In most cities, the police are there to serve and protect. Not "POS" as some folks think.

....Les

By all means call the police, harassment and vandalism are not in a teacher's job description and in no way should be tolerated. If you have the number on caller ID, and possibly have a student who works for a pizza delivery place, have them run the number through their system, this works especially well in smaller towns to get names and addresses of people. I'm sure once the parents are faced with the prospect of having to pay for their children's vandalism, and the students idnetity is known amongst the entire teaching staff, such miscreants and their parents will quickly get the misbehavior in check.

As said earlier, call the police. You could always put up a video camera just in case something does happen then maybe you'll have proof.

It's sad these days when kids disrespect those in authority such as teachers, the police or anyone that is doing a job that is there to help the kid.

ANY time this happens, don't "wait until morning" - the police are up all night and are usually happy to assist. It's not just their job, it's their profession.

Any time I've had an issue and needed police assistance, they've been there. And yes, occasionally when I've driven a shade too fast they've "reminded" me what the rules are - but that's also their job, and when I look at the situation honestly and objectively they've treated me fairly.

If you haven't called them yet, call them now. Next time, call them AS SOON AS THE INCIDENT OCCURS.

That remark is totally un-called for. Who do you call if your car gets vandalized, your home gets broken into, you get jumped by thugs? I bet you wouldn't call the LEO's that come out in the driving rain/sleet/snow to help you an, "over paid POS", now would you? I come from a family of LEO's and I can tell you that, if anything, they are waaaaay under-paid for the crap that they have to deal with both during work hours and after work hours. They are NEVER truly off-duty. If you must trash talk any public servant, at least trash talk the ones that deserve it. IRS auditors are a good starting point.

Glad to hear it. I know a teacher at my high school, who had a student rifle through his desk get a home phone number and when she failed the class began calling his house making threats. Its an unfortunate occurance but it does happen, I'm glad you have it resolved hopefuly thats the end of it (despite my own personal skeptisim)

And +1 for call the Police immediately next time.

Un-called for I agree, but he ingnorance behind such a comment is beyond the level I think will be corrected here. Its even more unaware than those people who genuinely believe MINIs can get 70 mpg; and when he needs help guess who he'll call and who the first person there to help will be. Yup, so its all talk nothing more.

Sounds like kids to me. They must love you because the did the Hyuandai. Defintely a police matter though as that's the way kids learn limits. I assume that, in a small town, the police will deal with the children appropriately.

Rethink your thoughts.

I'm sure he meant only certain "ones." What you failed to realize is that this guy might have had a bad incident with a "LEO". Don't knock someone for what they say. There are people dying overseas for this guy to say what he wants about the law enforcement. That's what makes this country so great.

Definitely get the cops involved. I'm sure your small town police department would take an interest and would help. I hope nothing happens. I'm sure it's a student.

They're called Terrorist Threats. The cops can look at a record of all calls coming to your number, and where they originated. Supposedly even if it's a cell phone number.

None of your neighbors saw or heard anything?

No one is dying overseas so anyone here, can say what they want. Troops are dying overseas for a demented reason that has nothing to do with protecting us. I'm a vet, and I approve of this message.

Wow... pretty harsh. What crawled up your tailpipe?

Most police I know are actually pretty cool. Regardless of what they're paid, it's not enough.
