Yes it is challenging to do it yourself, if you have not done it before. To have it done professionally will be around $600 depending on the amount of coverage and protection you want. You can purchase the pre-cut film on Ebay as I did for about $140.
The reason for having the paint protection film is to protect the paint surface from rock chips. Primarily the lower part of the hood, front bumper and headlights. I like to also do door edges, A-pillars, front of roof, rear upper bumper, door sills. Basically any places where it can get scratched or damaged

Boy I'm super late! I've been lurking around spying for the Astro Black club but decided PW was better for me. Here I am....'08 PW/B with lots of goods. Picked up Augustine in mid Aug but he's been in and out of the shop ever since. I'm finally starting to enjoy what I bought.
