3rd Generation Motor Swap
3rd Generation Motor Swap
Not sure where to post this, so apologies.
I currently have a 2018 Mini Cooper Countryman S (F60). The engine and turbo have blown because the previous owner was an idiot and the dealer who sold it to me screwed me.
Anyway, I am wondering if anyone knows if I can purchase a JCW engine from a 2020+ (the 300hp one) and drop it into my 2018.
From what I can gather, the engines at their core are the same. Both are a B48 (B46 for North American models (B46 vs B48 are the same physically just different emissions standards)). Looking at pictures, they appear to be identical in placement as well as supporting equipment. The big and obvious difference is the turbo and air ducts. The turbo is much larger, and the air ducts are much larger, but, from what I can tell, they still bolt up to the same locations. The intercooler is also larger as well.
Reading about changes done by year, I can't find any reference to mechanicals, such as engine mounts, etc. changing, it appears it was mostly cosmetic stuff. My best guess is that it should be possible but before I made such a large purchase, I was hoping someone here might have more insight.
Another question I had, assuming the engine swap IS possible, would I have to reprogram the ECU? I would assume so, is that something I could pay a dealer to do? I have reached out to two different Mini dealers and even MiniUSA but none of them seem to be able to or want to provide an answer.
Thank you for your time.

Best of wishes on such an endeavor! If it were me, I'd replace it with a JCW from 2018 or 2019, which I KNOW will fit without problems, but, I don't know about the ECU or wiring harness in general. Maybe do some extras such as different downpipe, maybe upgrade the intercooler, things that have been done before by others. But, heck, if you have the desire, there are a lot of possibilities to people like you!
