comparison between OBD hardware/software

F60 - 2019 CMS

Is there an existing general thread that discusses the differences between all the different OBD hardware/sw so on the market? I can find little snippets here and there, but that’s about it.

I want something pretty full featured not just for clearing codes which i can probably do with my old scanner.

For example, I wonder if the Bluetooth versions that run on your phone are as good as some of the corded versions that are available. maybe they’re better because it’s easier to update the app, then trying to update tool. anyway, I’m guessing that it’s excepted that some are much better than others, even if it’s just a better interface, etc., or more importantly, more features.

I’d appreciate any help pointing me in the right direction so I can buy a tool. Thanks

I use Beemercode and the Bluetooth OBDII dongle OBDLink CX. It has built-in macros for doing the most common things but has expert mode allowing you to dig into the detail and change just about anything.
I also have the BeemerLink app that lets you create custom dashboards based on any of the hundreds of data channels available. It also reads Errors & Messages and allows you to clear them. It has custom settings to turn on and off functions like ASD (the fake engine sound piped into the speakers) and open the exhaust flap with the press of a button. It also has a setting for the brake calipers you need to replace the pads. I can reset service messages too.
I haven't found anything I would want to do that I couldn't do with this OBD device. Others with more advanced needs might have a different experience.
