R53 2005 Mini Cooper S engine rebuild vs engine swap?
Engine troubles here on a 05 R53. Diagnosed of loss of compression of 4th cylinder. My mechanic was recommending rebuild of new piston/rings for $3800 and the other was complete engine swap for around 3 to 4 grand cost? Any recommendations on which route to go? Thanks

I just swapped an engine on a Honda auto instead of rebuilding. Not so difficult and no special engine tools needed. I know its not a Mini so costs are different but I spent $350 for an engine with 70k miles. I've seen Mini engines available on Craigslist. Also check car-parts.com for used through salvage yards near you. The Honda dealer wanted $5k for a used engine with 45k. I found the engine they were offering on car-parts.com for $750. So lots of labor goes into changing it out. If you DIY you'll save all that $$.
