General MINI TalkShared experiences, motoring minutes, and other general MINI-related discussion that applies to all MINIs, regardless of model, year or trim.
Just happened about an hour ago. Got off the phone with the insurance company and just processing everything now. Happened as I was leaving the gas station. A 2005 Ford F350 backed right into my driver side. The guy driving said he didn't even see my Mini in his rear view mirror. Looks like just the rear quarter of the car was damaged but who knows what else underneath is broken. Loud rubbing noise from the rear driver side wheel. Got it towed back to my office and will figure out the rest tomorrow.
Bummer! Don't know about your State but around here and most places, any time you put her in reverse ANYTHING bad happens it's your fault. Don't let the bozo off the hook.
Some 22 year old kid from Iowa hit me. His out of state insurance has been surprisingly helpful but both mine and his insurance cannot get a hold of him to get his statement which is holding up the determination of liability. My Mini is just sitting at the shop now waiting for an inspection.
They will most likely total it! It is common with Mini's!
I hope not, If so, I would probably buy it back from the insurance company.
Also just found out today that the other party's insurance accepted liability. Now the inspection is going to be scheduled by my shop hopefully this week.
Because they admitted fault, you have the upper hand and can make demands, that you want. Also, you do not need to use their preferred repair shop. Take it to the best one you can find!
I agree! Too bad this happened first of all! But if it were me I’d fight like he*l from any talk of totaling the car! It’s your car, it wasn’t your fault, and if you love it, then it deserves to motor on in good health!
Insurance companies always push for the easy way out but hold firm and demand it be properly repaired! I’ve seen much worse be repaired with no clue of having been damaged. Good body shops can do amazing work!
I restored a wrecked BMW 2002tii I found in a salvage yard many years ago and I swear it’s better than when it left the factory in 1971! The body shop pulled the smashed inner fender out so there was no hint of a collision. My point is it can be repaired and some cars are worth saving!
Good luck!

I can not tell you how many cars, that I see totaled in the dealer wrecking yards. They are often in better shape than many cars driving down the road. I know, I buy them! Cheaply!
Examples: 2007 Sonata $400, 2007 Ford Fusion $400, 2006 Toyota Camry $600. All of these were in pretty good shape. I bought these in 2017, 2018.
Sometimes only bumper cover damage, so with suspension damage. I only buy the with small body damage. Minis' usually go for more here at around $800 to $1200.
ps. I never buy branded title vehicles!

Reason: added info
Other company accepted liability. Damage is not as bad as the shop thought. Removed the quarter panel and there is no damage underneath. Rear bumper and tailgate is completely intact. They measured with some laser thingy and there is no deviation from the norm. Looks like just the quarter panel, the wheel arch and the rear tail light needs to be replaced. They will do more measurements and an alignment just to be sure. Hopefully, I get the Mini back in less than 10 days.
