What MINI to get?
Assuming your seeking a new MINI... MINI is switching over engines from Peugeot engines to BMW. The Clubman and 4-door Cooper have already switched over to the new 3 and 4 cylinder engines. Yes I said 3 cylinder for the non-S and 4 for the S. Test drive one of those and then drive the older N18 engine in the CM/PM to feel the difference. The new engine is expected for 2017 in most of the models.
Personally, avoid the spirit limiting ALL4 unless you are opting for the safety over performance. As the ALL4 second clutch in the rear differential keeps you driving smooth and safe.
The JCW is the identical engine/transmission in the S, except for tuning. You can purchase the JCW tune from S from MINI for much less than a new JCW (yes it will not come with the external trim and larger exhaust tips)

If I were looking for a Mini, I'd look for a 2005 or 2006 R53. I've driven R56 (Cooper and a JCW coupe) and F56 (5-door Cooper and 3-door Cooper S) loaner cars and I don't like them nearly as much.
But it's up to personal preference. I don't like the seamless power of the turbo engines. I don't like the steering (though it's better in the F56). I don't like the interiors of the newer cars. I don't like how quiet the newer cars are. I don't like the styling of the new cars, etc. etc.
I suggest driving all three generations and seeing what you think. They are different enough that you're sure to prefer one of them over the others.
And I wouldn't buy any Mini if you're worried about maintenance costs!
