Sealing touch up paint?
Sealing touch up paint?
I'm planning on fixing a bit of road rash with touchup paint. I've done it before and it looked nice afterwards, but after a few months of driving in heavy traffic all my hard work was erased with a new set of paint chips. I got a tip to spray clear acrylic to seal the touchup job and prevent any future damage to the paint, but I haven't heard of anyone else doing this. Has anyone used spray acrylic to protect their car from road rash? If so, what brand or type of spray do you recommend?
most touch up paint today is the same two part system as the paint on the car. There is a base (color) coat, and a clear top coat. Base coat is not very strong ... you are supposed to top it with clear for protection. Base doesn't have gloss either, that also comes from the clear. If you don't top with clear you have no strength and little UV protection. This has little bearing on "a new set of paint chips."
Simply spraying a clear on top of everything is almost certainly a bad idea tho .... for one, I'd read the surface prep' instructions. For a clear to stick properly it usually must be applied within hours of new base. If applied over an older paint sanding is typically required . . .
Here's a link to some instructions for using rattle cans of base/clear from a company I've had good luck with for years

note in particular in sanding section: Entire area to be painted should be dull and smooth.
