So I asked you guys about this car a few weeks ago, and I just got around to seeing it and negotiating price. I found it on Craigslist (I've listed the link below).
From what I could tell, the car is in great condition. It drove well and looked nice. There is a slight ding on the front bumper and a small crack in the windshield, but I'm more worried about the reliability of it. The seller said he has replaced the timing chain, radiator, and water pump. I had a Saab 9-3 in the past and it has given me nightmares. I just don't want to be in the same position as I was with the malfunctioning Saab.
I talked him down to $9,200, which is about the KBB value for one in very good condition.
It's also an N14 engine. I've been reading threads on here saying to stay far away. Soooo I'm basically looking for advice from those of you who are more knowledgeable than me
I'd highly recommend that you avoid buying this car because of its N14 engine....there are too many possible probs to include excessive oil consumption, carbon build up which will result in a CEL, and timing chain issues.
The exception is if you're able to do your own repairs or have a small independent import shop near your house that works on MINIs....only then would I recommend you buy it.
You need to check if the thermostat housing, timing chain, water pump, turbo oil lines, etc was replaced . Run the vin by your local MINI dealership service department and see what was done first asap. It will be in the service history. I would get it inspected before i buy.
Be sure this is an 'unmodified' car with full-service history.
Have a complete PPI (pre-purchase inspection) done by a qualified shop familiar with the Mini.
That being said, some people may shy away from the N14 based 2007-2010 Hardtops because of the 'cold start rattle' or 'death rattle' problem - but the recall for this issue was limited to the 2007-2009 models. Check out this article: http://new.minimania.com/Mini_Cooper_Cold_Start_Rattle
The car in the ad looks very clean, but we could not tell the condition of the tires. At 91K miles, I would anticipate a new clutch in the near future ($$$ if done at a shop). If the oil was not changed frequently (5K interval), there is a possibility of turbo problems down the road (based on anecdotal evidence).
The Mini does not offer Toyota reliability or durability, but many can go 200K without major issues....
We negotiated the price down to $8,500 and seller would pay for the inspection. Before that could be done, I found out that the loan has a lien on it. Just don't feel comfortable enough with the car to deal with the hassle. Thanks for all of the advice y'all!
