Help Buying a Mini.......engine questions

I am interested in buying a 2006-2012 Mini Convertible .

Does anyone have specs or a link to info for the engine changes of those years and any other body-driveline changes?

I'd stay away from the 2009 – 2010 R57 S model convertible because of the N14 engine.

2005 -2008 is the R52 MINI Cooper , 2009-2010 Cooper ( n12engine ), 2009-2010 Cooper S ( N14) , 2011+ Cooper is N16 engine, 2011+ Cooper S is N18 engine.

The later 2011+ Convertible or the 2005-2008 is the R52 which is what i have and like. 261K+ on mine.

Also stay away from the R52 with auto (CVT) transmission.

Good point about the CVT. ...also avoid the MINI Convertible (R52) years 2005 to 2008...the non S model with the auto transmission.

Are there any still on the road?

Best convertible years, '05 to '07. The R52 S came with the W11 lump and the 6 speed Getrag gear box, both bullet proof. Also, while searching look for a wind deflector. The only other thing to look for are the twisty roads to nowhere.

Looks like I will be buying a R52 or R57.........I want a S or JCW.
Would prefer an auto but it is not a must.

What are the differences in the engines?

The gen1 s has a supercharger.....IMO the whine is intoxicating.....pretty simple, iron block, well know motor...
The gen 2 has a turbo...stick to the later ones with the n18 motor IMO....most of the timing chain issues were kinda reduced, as was the carbon issues....

Drive one of each....the character of the cars are VERY different...
Gen1 more raw IMO...more of a driver's car...the gen2 more plush, more refined, bigger by a bit.
Each as their own + and -
Gotta try them...hopefully in quick succession...

Definitely the supercharger!
Whichever one you do get include taking real good care of the canvas in your routine. The preferred products for this, Ragg Topp or 303 aerospace protectant. If the scissor joints start to squeak, a shot of Liquid Wrench dry lube works fine. Don't use WD-40 for that.
