2016 MINI CLUBMAN ALL4 ARRIVES THIS APRIL
By Erick Ayapana Words
January 20, 2016

Cooper S Clubman ALL4 is quicker than the front-drive model.

The second-generation 2016 Mini Clubman is more grown-up than its predecessor, and a new feature solidifies that fact. Starting this April, the new Clubman will be offered with Mini’s All4 all-wheel-drive system, an option that was previously exclusive to the Countryman and Paceman crossovers.

All-wheel drive will be offered on both of the Clubman’s available engines, and power ratings are identical to the front-drive variants. For starters, the Mini Cooper Clubman ALL4 is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-3 engine that makes 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the Mini Cooper S Clubman ALL4 is fitted with a 2.0-liter turbo-four rated at 189 hp and 207 lb-ft. Both powertrains come standard with a six-speed manual, while an eight-speed auto is optional.

Aside from the added grip, Mini says the ALL4 system affects acceleration times. The automaker claims the Cooper S Clubman ALL4 will run to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds with the manual transmission or 6.6 seconds with the automatic. Those times represent a 0.3-second improvement from the front-drive model's estimated 0-60 mph times. The base Cooper Clubman ALL4, however, has the opposite effect with an estimated 0-60 mph time of 9.3 and 9.2 seconds for the manual and automatic transmissions, respectively. The front-drive version does the deed in an estimated 8.9 seconds (for both gearboxes). The EPA hasn't rated the Clubman ALL4, but Mini says the drop in fuel economy should be minimal.

To maximize fuel efficiency, the front-drive biased ALL4 system will only send power to the rear wheels when needed. The Cooper S Clubman ALL4 comes standard with a Performance Control function, which acts as a torque vectoring system that applies brakes to the inside wheels while maneuvering through corners. The Clubman ALL4 S ground clearance remains identical to the front-drive model at 5.6 inches.

Aside from its ALL4 badges, the all-wheel-drive Clubman looks identical to its front-drive counterpart. The ALL4’s introduction will expand the Clubman’s color palette to include Digital Blue Metallic. Pricing and other details should be released later this month.
