Oil Level Confusion

Good evening. Just have a question about my latest JCW. My new Mini is a 2015 JCW and I just love it. Since this is the first JCW that doesn't have the problematic dip stick. After only 900 miles I noticed when I check the digital Guage it reads close to Min. Been that way even when I added a pint. Is this normal?

Reading it wrong It's full.

When you start to see black instead of orange heading towards MIN then oil is needed

Didn't think that would be easy to get confused. But how crazy is that, a digital readout in the cabin! Wonder if the sensor goes out, it automatically shuts off the engine?

This little trick is gonna bite 'em in the butt. A relay, fuse or connector fails and an engine seizes, lay it on the guy who came up with this chuckle headed idea?
Farm equipment - EVERY zerk is greased and EVERY fluid level is checked before heading for the field whether they need it or not.
Pre-flight - EVERY fluid level and system is checked. Like another old pilot pointed out, no where to pull over if something falls off.
Now they want us to trust an unproven-over-time system to keep the thing moving.

are you saying it never shows orange all the way up? I can see lots of folks overfilling the oil chasing after that last bit.

Time for a remedial guage reading class......
IMO the picture of it was pretty self explanatory......
Remember...an oil level guage must be able to show low, full, and overfilled....just like a dipstick.

I'd be willing to bet that the majority of drivers have no idea how to check oil level. Back in ancient times the gas station attendant would check your oil, that is rarely done.

Called Mini USA rep

Passed this question to the tech rep along with my Vin. He told me not to worry till the Guage was bouncing around the Min. level and the low oil warning comes up. Still makes me wonder why you wouldn't want to fill up till it shows just below the Max level. I am keeping all notes on my conversations just in case. I have had Mini's for years and follow everything. Should be made clearer though

Thanks (Drive Hard

I have to say, Thanks drive hard. I just looked back at your response and it fell into place. Too bad the dealer or there service people or any other mini dealers put it that way. Feel better now. Being this is my 3rd JCW in 15 years (all but the '15) had dip sticks. Still learning the new in and outs of the '15 JCW. Thanks again buddy. Gary

Your welcome. And another tidbit is if you are at MIN add 1 quart. Don't overfill. 2015 hardtop manual page 192 193 for instructions on "checkin" level.

MOTOR ON !
