1st gen. power steering hot and cold question.
hi all!!!
i ve a cooper 2002 with 210 000 km. love this little car!
here the problem,
after 15 min of driving stop for shopping..10 min. I drove the car to my other destination, and I noticed that the steering was hard to turn. Also, I hear a noise comming near the power steering pump even with the ignition key in my hand!!! I had to disconect the battery to stop this faulty device... dunno if that noise come for the ps fan or the ps pump. I let the car cool completly. I tested the power steering at a cold stage. and the Wheel was easy to turn,,... what do you think??? what s the prob? help!!!l

Are you overheating and are you running the A/C all the time , the fan kicks on with the A/C and runs and if you are in a very how climate the P/S fan and main fan will run after you stop the car and shut it off.
But being that the P/S pump is hard to turn , the pump might be overheating.
You have a couple thing going on here and I would check the p/S fan ( make sure nothing is blocking between it and the pump ), the pump and make sure the P/S CHF fluid is filled up and no leaks.
If the fan is original and has no grille protection on it, I would get a new fan.
More info here, there was a extended warrenty for the pump in the Fan in the US and Canada , but I don't know where you are located.
More info on everything here :
