I think maybe the term PCV should be dropped
Yes this is so not new really.....I had found a nice long post about this, ha how many, thought I had something to share so wrote this to fit now I cant find the thing after being timed out must be blind.
I think maybe the term PCV should be dropped because direct injection is different enough that it can be confusing. Direct injection is closer to diesel in many ways. The method of controlling vacuum is a diaphragm depression valve which should be tuned to an engine to maintain proper vacuum (I like about 5in hg for my max, on a street/track build) especially when there isn’t a scavenging pump to maintain vacuum, and it should be replaceable. Note the N14 I have runs much better with vacuum than without.
The point about oil mist causing more than just clogged intake valves can not be emphasized enough. Direct injection, injectors are designed to run in three modes Super lean, Mixed, And all out. During highway cruising Super lean or mixed, I believe a super deposit is formed when oil mist is burned, If you handle your pistons and have built a few different kinds of engines you will know what I mean, these deposits are what I think shorten engine life.
I now run a multistage system, two catch cans and a very fine mesh. I think I'm in the 90ish percent range judging by an air filter stage I used for a bit. Yes we need 100%. Note Catch cans do work, when the pressure changes oil and water separates out, its just how many can you use. All systems should have a blow off valve which reseals. Note you should be collecting lots of water even if you are only getting the smallest amount of oil as water is a main component of the actual blow-by.
Part of regular maintenance should be cleaning out your intake tubes even at 98% oil will separate out anywhere there is a change in cross section area, like at seems, and work its way along re-entering the air charge as new oil-mist.
For all that I still think direct injection is super sweet, so much mid range torque, so much tune-ability.
Off topic sort of but our oil squirters, I do believe in the concept but has any one tried adjusting the things?
