Cooling problem
Cooling problem
OK,
(It's NOT the Resistor)
(2004 Mini Cooper with 98,000 miles)
So, a few days ago, I get out of my car and the High fan is blowing.
I find it odd, but don't think a lot about it, but it does it 2 more times that day.
So I search and some said, it was probably low on fluid, and indeed it was a little low, so I add some water.
Well then I start paying attention to the gauge and it hangs out pretty steady in the middle, but I am sitting in traffic and it climbs from the middle to the max in about 15 seconds or less I hear the high speed fan come on and it recovers. the scenario takes 20 to 30 seconds.
I check the low speed fan. I turn on the AC and low speed fan comes on, I pull the low fan relay and high speed fan come on, I THINK that is working right.
This seems to happen more when it is cold and may relate somehow to the heater. I say that because it did it again today and after it recovered , the heat in the car wouldn't really warm.
No light ever came on accept the little light on the top hash of the gauge.
So any ideas?
Cliffs:
Temp runs at temp. In traffic or stopped, the temp intermittently sweeps up and recover. Low fan & High fan seems to be working. may or may not e related to cold outside temperatures.

The temp gauge stays pegged in the middle for about a 40 degree range which is deceptive. Regardless, your car is overheating unless the high speed fan runs. If your coolant is at the proper level and bled properly, you might have a water pump issue or a semi-clogged radiator. Have you ever flushed your coolant?

I don't understand "stays pegged in the middle for 40 degrees". do you mean from the middle to pegged is 40 degrees?
The high speed fan does run, does that mean I am likely OK? I am worried about over heating / warping the head, etc.
Thanks.
You don't want the high speed fan cycling on and off all the time, it does mean your engine is running hot.
