The sculptured look of the R53 is a hard act to follow. An elitist? Yup.

R50 and R53 all the way!

Proud R50 owner, but wouldn't mind having an R53 someday. The 1st gens just look better to my eye. I also feel they have more character being the first ones to come out, but I haven't spent any time in a 2nd gen to confirm it...

I've had a 1st gen MINI since 2005. 1st was a '02 R50 & now my '04 R53 which I've had since 2007. Still whining!

Like others have said, I thought I would never trade my R53 for an R56. I swore I did not want to do away with the Supercharger whine and that the handling was far superior. Then I got my 2012 and found out how silly I was. The supercharger whine is replaced with a much better sounding exhaust, the turbo produces so much more low end torque than my R53 ever did even with a CAI and 15% pulley. I will conceded that the handling of the standard R56 was way too soft, but the JCW suspension solved that one and then some.

So only thing I have to say is try out an R56 and I am sure would change your opinion like I did.
