Steering wheel change/airbag warning light??

I changed the steering wheel on my 2012 Clubman today. It was fairly straightforward and with the help of my former MINI tech friend it only took about 1/2 hour. We chose not to disconnect the battery, without incident, but now the airbag warning light and display is on.
It sensed that we disconnected the airbag. How can I reset/rectify this without a visit to the dealer. anyone know?
Thank you

Once an airbag warning is triggered, it will stay on and won't clear by itself, even if you fix the condition that caused it. It will stay on until cleared with a reset tool (at a dealer, independent shop, or your own).

It would have been a good precaution to disconnect the battery, but I don't think it is absolutely necessary. I thought that the car doesn't check for airbags until it is turned on. There is some possibility that something wasn't reassembled or reconnected properly.
