Check engine light
Check engine light
Hi everyone,
This is my first post so I hope you guys don't mind. I have a check engine light that the dealer had a hard time solving. It took them almost 4 weeks to finally figure out the problem and they told me it was a combination of the temperature coolant sensor recall and firmware update.
The car is a 2012 Cooper Classic convertible. I don't buy what they told me so I would like to hear from you. The car was purchased in May 2012 with 8500Km when the CEL came on. Back in June I bought a a K&N air filter for the car and the CEL came on in November 2012. I only use the car on weekends, hence the reason why the mileage is low.
Does anyone here have an issue with K&N filter? I have taken off the filter the first time the CEL came and I have not re-install it since I got the car back.
I will appreciate any comment you can give me.

K&N filters from what I understand uses filter material infused with oil to help trap particals from entering the engine. If the filter is put on straight out of the box, it can cause havoc with the mass airflow sensor. I've heard that before installing it people will use an old t-shirt or cloth on the filter to soak up the excess oil so the MAF sensor problem doesn't arise. Maybe because your MINI is only a weekend it took awhile for this problem to happen. This is my best guess anyway.
