This happened to me three days ago. It was a 55MPH collision with the passenger quarter of a Kia that got knocked into my lane from another vehicle rear ending it. Behold the awesome safety of the Mini:
Oh, come on ... that'll buff right out.
Seriously, very glad to hear you weren't seriously hurt ... aside from the major heartache, that is.
I did get a ticket. I believe that in Maryland they are supposed to remain behind the pulled over vehicle until the person that was pulled over is back in traffic. The officer did explain later that he was still a little wary about remaining on the side of the road, as pretty much the same thing that happened to me happened to him a month earlier. He did happen to be in a brand new cruiser.
I don't blame him; I'm still very uncomfortable when stopped on the side of the road.

I don't know what the official position is, but I'm sure if you're being flagged over on a main road, they won't mind if you keep going to a safe spot like a side street or parking lot. As long as you slow down and it is clear that you're not attempting to elude, I'm sure the ociffer would prefer to stop in a safer area, too. Any LEO's in the audience, please feel free to chime in and either confirm or deny ...
your better off. your passenger front tire has some feathering. looked like you needed an alignment anyway
jk. glad your ok. i would have punched the driver of whoever caused that accident
I figured I'd just buy a new car each time I wore out the tires. As far as the other driver is concerned: I think he has enough on his mind. I wasn't even mad. Anyone can make a mistake, but some can be tragic. I wouldn't want to be in his position.

Exactly how I felt when a gal hit mine on the right rear wheel while parked. I wasn't happy, and I'm pretty sure she was messing with her cell phone when it happened (you don't just "drift" to the left for no reason), but considering how horrible she felt, crying and apologizing and telling her insurance company on the phone it was her fault... Well... Crap happens.
Given this photo, I guess I shouldn't feel so bad about it compared to the others I've seen in this thread. But this is what $8,000 worth of damage looks like... $9,000 if you count the rental car they provided for five weeks while we waited on parts.
In the end, it was better than new. New tires. A full alignment it needed anyway. Scuffed trim and bumper cover before the accident that bugged me—replaced as part of the repairs. And I had them strip and repaint the hood and apply a clear bra (previous owner must have lived on a dirt road). So? All good in the end...
Total my 2012 S a few months ago on the thruway. Rear ended someone in a 2012 Toyota SUV who stopped short after a chain of stops in from of them. They ended up with $2500 in damage and mine damage was 20K. Now I have a JCW coupe
I'm an MA in NH and this was a customer's car that he replaced. The red pickup truck in the background was what he went headon with on a road that was 50mph. MINI Driver was treated and released from hospital and truck driver spent 3 days in the hospital. MINI driver has a new 2013 just the way he wanted it. Accident was early Nov 2012.
Mini in a hit and run. The engine was down the street from the rest of the car. In this one the Mini's driver suffered a fractured sternum, torn ligament in his ankle, and bumps and bruises. From the looks of the car, that's not bad!

This reminds me of a story a friend of mine told me.
Him and his then girlfriend were on the side of the road due a failure. He was out looking under the hood and she was yelling at him to get back in the car. So he got back in the car and as soon as he did, a car rear-ended them.

Sometimes it's good to listen to others, even if it is shrill and high pitched! ;-)

I wish more people understood this--rarely do people cause accidents on purpose. We all screw up, and I think part of the "test" is how we handle it. Your type of grace is rare.
Hopefully someone will show you the grace you have shown!!

Well, thanks. I have to admit that it was weird for me, as I can be quite a hot-head sometimes. But in this case I felt only sadness it had happened, and not a shred of anger. And like I said in my post, the car is actually better now than beforehand.
Maybe if I'd been through what some of the other photos here show, I'd feel otherwise... Who knows. Even then, no matter how hard we try, life happens, and maybe that's the real insight in the end.
Here's what happened to my wife's car this summer:
Can't find the paperwork so I don't have an exact amount, but there was no doubt we would fix it. She lightly rear-ended an SUV that stopped too quickly. I think that's about $2500 dollars worth of damage you're looking at.
Val
P.S. to Kirby 11: I meant to post and or link to that accident but you beat me to it. I can't believe that they never found that Jeep or that it was able to make it all the way to this end of 35th...

I am always sorry to see a damaged MINI...but an SUV that stopped too fast as compared to a MINI ....just maybe was she a little too close?
I totaled my MINI three weeks ago. I was sleep-deprived and made a bad decision which resulted in me hitting a highway support pillar head-on. Thankfully, no one else was involved. I broke my foot, which required surgery, but other than that and some bruises I'm ok. I hate that I made such a stupid decision but I'm so thankful for how well my MINI protected me.
