Oil consumption Mini Cooper s N18 engine

Hi
I have a Mini Cooper S N18 engine, purchased with 9000 miles
on the clock. I have read that minis consume quite a bit of
engine oil is this true for all Mini Cooper S ?
I have not done a lot of miles in my car yet a lot of short trips at
moment, the car is always stopped with a hot engine never started
and stopped with a cool engine.
I have done 1200 miles in my car and it has not used any oil at all,
at least what shows on the dip stick. It's not showing full because of
petrol dilution either as the last time I checked the oil it was fully up to
temperature after a run, I let it tick over in garage till the cooling fan ran
then I stopped it, left it for 6 min and then checked it multiple times
and it was still full to max mark.
Thanks Peter

I would NOT worry if you are NOT consuming oil....
Some cars seem to burn oil...gen1 or gen2.
I kinda suspect it is a combination of BOTH build and orgional break-in.
If you are worried about oil dilution, send an oil sample off for a $20 oil test...it will give you exact #'s and flag it on the report if it is too high for the miles.
What i have done since new is chsnge my oil every 7500 miles, and spend the test fee on fresh oil and a filter (diy) just did not reset the computer to let mini fo the free oilchanges as it said they were due...some folks do go 15000 miles, but imo if you want to keep the car long term, do it a bit more...not to make it an oil debate but modern oils sre good but things like possible dilution imo makes it safer to change it sooner or test....and in my case, i want to limt the length the oil sits in the car to 6 months, regardless of miles.

How are you reading oil level?. Be careful because the mini dipstick is hard to read. I have a craven speed and still have to put it in and out about four times to get a accurate reading. Oil seems to stay in the tube and make it look like you are full.

I agree with jkapinos, you must be very carefull the way you read the oil level. The following link gives the reasons it is so difficult and ways to get a good reading. The post was made because so many owners have had problems caused by not being able to read the dipstick.

I do my oil changes every 5-7K miles but mostly 5K miles. I have the N18 engine and mine has no issues of burning or consuming too much oil. I just checked it two days ago at around 4.5K miles since I did my oil change. I got about 500 miles til my next one. You should be fine as long as your intervals are shortened.

both my dad and i have 2012 cms all4s

both cars will consume oil from the full mark to about 1/2 in a couple hundred miles

if the oil level is left at the 1/2 mark, no more oil is consumed until the next oil/filter change

I have a 2013 roadster and have not seen my oil drop. But I change my oil every 5,000 miles.

I've been checking (non-S, but whatever), and while I see a LOT of black carbon buildup on the exhaust tip, it doesn't seem to have lost any oil (well, not an amount that's measurable on the dipstick. Opening that hood is still a beast of a job for me LOL

Mini oil consumption

I love in Pueryo Rico, and have a Mini 08 base. I love this car and gas mileage is superb. I just took my car for service and they asked me if I wanted oil change, since I last changed it 11 month ago bit only 9k miles I said ok. For my surprise the car was missing 2 quarts. Wow!! Surprise, surprise... At least nothing happened but now I will have to reduce the mileage and time i change it, and take a look at the dipstick once in a while.

2013 Clubman S w 12K, have not seen any oil consumption. With such a new car, I would be concerned if there were oil consumption.....

Ways to read the dipstick

Peter,

The problem with checking the oil with the stock dipstick is that the lower bulge drags oil up the dipstick tube when the dipstick is pulled out. When the dipstick is wiped off and reinserted, oil is wiped off the tube onto the upper bulge. When the upper bulge is coated with oil it looks like the oil level is at the maximum. The following link shows the best modifications or methods I have found to get a good reading. The forth method is very reliable and uses the stock dipstick.
